Pickleball coming to Kaslo
An epidemic is spreading from the USA into Canada
and BC – currently reaching all corners of BC. It is highly
contagious and addictive and can only be treated by join-
ing in! It’s called Pickleball! Check out this new sport by
searching ‘Pickleball’ on YouTube and see a local link for

Why is it so contagious? Because it can be played enjoy-
ably by all ages, both boys and girls and the elderly with
their mobility problems (knees, legs) can play competi-
tively, as being able to run and jump is not a requirement.
Pickleball will start in Kaslo on Tuesday, April 10, likely
at 7 pm, at JV Humphries school gym. A few racquets are
available for use by newcomers. Come, join and play or

 2018 CFNKL Grants
The Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society
(CFNKLS) is calling for applications for its 2018 granting
cycle. CFNKLS has endowment funds totalling just over one
million dollars. The interest from those endowments allows
us to provide grants on an annual basis. A total of $44,000 is
available to Registered Charities and other qualified donees
in the North Kootenay Lake region. “Grant applications for
up to $4,000 will be considered. Special projects requiring
greater funding may also be considered, if funds permit,
but such applications should first should be discussed with
CFNKLS in advance of the application deadline.”
Eligible projects include: Arts, Culture and Heritage;
Children, Youth and Family; Community Economic
Development; Education; Health, Recreation and Sports;
Environmental Sustainability.CFNKLS also administers
the McKinnon Family Fund Bursary to a student enter-
ing post secondary training in the trades and vocational
education. The value of this bursary in 2019 is $840.
Eligibility guidelines, policies and application forms are
available on the CFNKLS website at www.nklcommunityfund.
org Application deadline for grants and the bursary is Friday,
April 27, 2018. Successful applicants will be announced at our
Annual General Meeting on Monday, June 4 at the Langham
Cultural Centre in Kaslo. Completed applications may be

The Langham presents...
‘An Unconventional Life’ is the result of three Kootenay
artists collaborating during the winter months; daring to
dream not only about Spring returning, but also about
sharing their creative efforts with an audience.
When local soprano Noémi Kiss decided she wanted to
sing all the songs from the movie Yentl starring Barbara
Streisand, she asked Kaslo thespian Lynn van Deursen if
she could ‘write something theatrical’ to link the songs
together and create a performance piece. Noémi then
asked Nelson pianist Judy Runions if she’d be willing
to transpose the orchestral score and accompany her.
Through the guise of a graduation speech, they tell the
tale of an unconventional young woman and her passion-
ate pursuit of an education.
At the Langham Theatre in Kaslo on Friday and Satur-
day, April 20 and 21 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, April 22 at
4 pm. Tickets are $15 available at Sunnyside Naturals &
Willow Home Gallery in Kaslo.

Strong, at the Kootenay Lake Hospital,
Nelson BC at the age of 86.
Bruce was born in Stonewall,
Manitoba to John William and
Winnifred Strong, the youngest of
eight children.
He married Agnes Irene Violet Gosling
in 1950 at Argyle, Manitoba, and they
had 2 children, Lynne and Bob. Bruce
worked at the mine in Bissett, Manitoba.

and they had a son Bill.
He worked for Imperial Oil delivering
oil. Around 1960 they moved to Itu-
na, Saskatchewan for a short period of
time, then back to BC. They lived in
Bridesville and at that time Lynne and
Bob joined them. The final move was
to Perry Siding in the Slocan Valley in
1968, where Bruce resided right up to
his passing.
Over the years Bruce worked at sever-
al underground mining operations in
Manitoba and BC – Greenwood, Rock
Creek, Rossland, Slocan, Wasa Lake.
While still in Bridesville he started
his own diamond drilling company,
Bridesville Drilling. He had no formal
training but was able to repair almost
any mechanical apparatus. In later
years Bruce and Phoosh enjoyed their
fifth wheel trailer, camping out at Trout
Lake, Ainsworth and other spots, as well
as fishing trips.
He especially enjoyed his pride and joy
– the big blue and white boat. Bruce
loved to play practical jokes and had
a sense of humour that often caught
people off guard.

Strong; Sheldon Strong (Chelsie); Dale
Strong and Jesse Strong.
Bruce was predeceased by six of his sib-
lings, his first wife Agnes, May 28, 2017
and second wife Elizabeth (Phoosh)
March 16, 2006.
A Celebration of Life will be held
at the Winlaw Hall April 14, 2018
from 1 to 4 pm where a sharing of sto-
ries and memories would be welcome.
