The Education Undergraduate Society arranges and provides Professional Development


workshops for education students at the University of Lethbridge. This letter is written at the
request of Elizabeth Appenheimer who attended the following seminars during the months
of September, October, and November of 2017:

Jenna Lowe: “Teaching Shakespeare- How to Create an Enriching Experience for you and your
Students”
You probably had strong feelings about your experience with Shakespeare in school: you either loved it
or hated it. You may even have strong opinions on whether studying The Bard should still be required in
the Program of Studies. In this session, Jenna will attempt to bring some resolution to the debate and all
the typical related emotions by examining why and how teaching Shakespeare can be a wildly enriching
and energizing experience for you and your students. After all, “There is nothing either good or bad, but
thinking makes it so.”

Chris Mattatall: “Lessons I Learned in Prison: Teaching, Learning and the Human Condition”
Dr. Chris Mattatall spent six years in a maximum-security youth prison as a teacher and creator a black
light theatre company that toured the province with young offenders. Come and listen as Dr. Mattatall—
storyteller and teacher—shares insight into how prison shaped his understanding of teaching, learning and
the human condition. During this PD Session, we will also be celebrating World Teachers’ Day!

Jeffrey MacCormack: “Morphological Instruction in the Classroom”


Any idea what “morphological instruction” means? This session will introduce students to the dynamic
world of teaching morphological instruction in the classroom, alongside providing student teacher with a
multitude of tools and techniques that they can implement in their own classrooms.

ATA: “Teacher Wellness”


“This workshop asks, “How can teachers learn to take greater responsibility for their personal and
professional wellness to ensure that they have the capacity to help others?” Teachers will reflect upon
their current state of wellness and consider approaches to improve their health and well-being. The
interrelationship of the physical, emotional, social and psychological states will be explored and ideas for
making informed choices about improving quality of life will be shared.”- Alberta Teacher’s Association

Kristina Larkin and David Fuller: “Working with Newcomers”
As our classrooms and communities continue to become more diverse – both among students and among
teachers who reflect their classrooms – we learn to make our learning communities safer and more
welcoming. Connect with Kristina Larkin, Manager of Youth Settlement Services and Dave Fuller, ESL
Lead Teacher of Lethbridge School District 51, to learn more about the make-up of today’s global
classrooms, and the resources and relationships that can make working with these students more
meaningful!

Ever Active Schools: “Health and Wellness Initiatives in Schools”


Ever Active Schools is an initiative that assists school communities in creating healthy school
communities. Through fostering social and physical environments that support improving the health and
learning outcomes of students in Alberta. Join Brian Torrance as he discusses an overview of
comprehensive school health and dig down into some specific health and wellness initiatives in schools.

Richelle Marynowski: “Cooperative (Active) Learning”


Are you wanting to learn about Cooperative Learning? Are you wanting to learn how to get your students
up and active throughout your lesson? If so, this PD session is for you! Join Richelle Marynowski where
she will illustrate three cooperative learning activities that you can use in your classroom. Be prepared to
move during this session!
