(e) Summary: North Carolina ESL teacher Astrid Emil Francis came to the U.S. from
Guatemala at age 15 with only a 6th grade education, and knowing no English. The article shares
how her experiences in school helped to shape her understanding of the Hispanic student
population at her school. Francis has become an advocate for the ELL (English Language
Learners) students, with not only a deep understanding of the difficulties of learning English as a
second language; however an understanding of the research that supports integrating bilingual
instruction in the classroom. One way Francis is ensuring ELL success is by inviting families
into the school, and creating a warm, and welcoming environment for parents to become apart of
their child’s education, while empowering and equipping these parents to teach their child. For
example, Francis was approved for a grant that provided the means to purchase children’s
literature in Spanish so that Spanish-speaking parents can read to their child. Francis utilizes the
time she is able to connect with parents to provide them the resources they need in order to be
affirmed and educated on their abilities to be a partner in their student’s education, whilst making
strides towards bridging the gap between home and school.
