Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
• Describe the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4‐4
• Locate and describe the function of the ZS4‐4 CRU/FRUs

• Describe the cabling with attached storage (drive enclosure) and cluster cabling

• Describe ZS4‐4 replacement procedures (optional)
How to use this training, the training is made up of slides and interactions. Within the
interaction, use the buttons at the bottom to advance the training. Limited audio, various slides
have audio narration. The interactions do not have any audio, allowing the learner to take their
time to read and explore the interaction. In the upper ride corner you will find the resources
tab, click on it to view course PDFs and ZS4‐4 setup poster, then to the left you will see the
Glossary and ZS4‐4 FAQ Interactions tabs.

There are four interactions that have no audio, take the time to read and explore each
interaction.
The Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4-4 3D model provide a unique opportunity to help reinforce your
understanding of the ZS4-4 hardware. The demonstration requires a connection to the internet
and takes anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 minute to load, please be patient. The 3D demo has
controls at the bottom of the window, you can read ZS4-4 notes, features, turn the model, move
it around, even measure the ZS4-4 with in the demo. Have fun exploring the ZS4-4.
The installing ZS4-4, DE2-24P and DE2-24C interactions provide all you need to know to install
the ZS4-4 product. Under the attachments tab in the upper right hand corner, you will find the
ZS4-4 setup poster. There are three interactions with no audio, take the time to read and
explore each interaction.
Connecting the drive enclosures to the ZS4 controller with the appropriate documentation, setup
posters and training should be straight forward. All of the cabling diagrams in this section came
from the engineering Product Concept Documents (PCD). The cabling diagrams display
multiple configurations , single and clustered cabling example for the ZS3-4. Take your time
and review each of the cabling diagrams, after reviewing some of the diagrams, notice the
similarities between cabling schemes. Toward the end of the section, there's a cluster cabling
example and the CLUSTRON card has moved to port 4 on the ZS4-4 controller.
For safety reasons, mount the heaviest equipment, typically disk shelves, at the bottom of the cabinet.
Refer to the appropriate Oracle Safety and Compliance Guide for rack‐mounting guidelines.
To best prepare for cabling controllers to disk shelves, now and in the future, mount controllers in the
middle of the cabinet.
Do not span disk chains across multiple cabinets.
Do not remove cabinet panels to run cables between cabinets.
To maximize performance, use the maximum number of disk chains supported by the controller’s SAS
HBAs. For example, four SAS HBAs with eight chains and eight disk shelves will have better performance
than two SAS HBAs with four chains and eight disk shelves.
Balance the number of disk shelves across the disk chains in your system.
The maximum number of disk shelves supported by each disk chain is six.
Connect each disk chain to two HBAs if available.
Do not mix disks with different capacities or rotation speeds within a single disk shelf.
The maximum cable length between DE2‐24 disk shelves is two meters.
The maximum cable length between Sun Disk Shelves is 0.5 meters.
The maximum cable length between a controller and disk shelves is six meters.
The cabling information in this section shows a subset of the supported configurations
for Oracle ZFS Storage controllers. For the maximum number of disk shelves per
controller, take a look at the following table.
Note: All of the cabling examples use the DE2-24P, both DE2 drive enclosures use the same
IOM. The DE2-24P IOM-0 is upside down as compared to both of the DE2-24C IOMs placed
right side up. Therefore the ports are reversed on the DE2-24P in the following cabling
examples.
ZS4‐4 cluster cabling, the ZS4‐4 CLUSTRON card is in slot 4.
Powering on, configuring and initial configuration of the appliance interaction provides the
necessary steps to power on and perform initial configure of the ZS4-4 appliance. There is no
audio, read and explore the interaction.
Use My Oracle Support (MOS) article 2021771.1 for ZFS Storage Appliance software updates. Software
updates for Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances provide additional features, bug fixes, and occasionally
security updates, thus allowing your storage environment to run at peak efficiency. A software update is
a binary file, which is the same for all supported platforms, that contains new management software as
well as new hardware firmware for your storage controllers and disk shelves. Please carefully review the
appropriate release notes below prior to updating. Additional Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance related
software is available for download at the Oracle Technology Network.
