Unit Title: The Right Triangles Name: Denise Rios

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 8th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CACSS.Math.MP3
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

CACSS.Math.MP7
Look for and make use of structure.

CACSS.Math.Content.8.G.B6
Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.

CACSS.Math.Content.8.G.B7
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two
and three dimensions.

CA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.7
Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a
flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

● Prove that equality between the sum of short sides of a triangle squared and the longest side squared only occurs with right
triangles.
● Learn to apply the conceptual understanding of when and why the Pythagorean Theorem is equivalent in order to solve visually
for missing side lengths.
● Understand the structure of the Pythagorean Theorem algebraically in order to solve for an unknown side length as an equation.
● Students will construct a visual representation of The Pythagorean Theorem and differentiate between characteristics that define a
concept and items that that are lacking some key characteristics of the concept.
Unit Summary:
During this unit students will be introduced to The Pythagorean Theorem. They will be able to use the theorem to classify triangles to
prove the theorem and its converse. Students will use a diagram to identify key components useful to the algebraic expression for
classifying triangles and finding the missing side of right triangles. Students will complete a webercise activity utilizing the internet to
identify key information relevant to the theorem. Then students will use the frayor model to identify essential and nonessential
characteristic as well as examples and non examples.
