KTPS/INTASC 5: Application of Content

To show my application of content I am choosing the Video Lesson as my artifact. The lesson
was a twenty-minute lesson for my secondary instrumental class, in which I had to compose a
lesson to teach to a group of high school students. Students had to participate in my application
of breathing exercises to build up their endurance, warming up on long tones to check their
intonation with each other, and then testing their ear and self with the Bb scale in solfege.
I chose a Macro-Micro-Macro rehearsal, where I would look at the big picture, the whole piece,
and go back and work on sections that didn’t sound up to par. By studying the score, I already
knew that there would be problems with the low brass lining up and the staccato notes within the
piece. The ensemble worked together to make the corrections I brought up, and I felt that the
students followed my directions very well. In my discussions like addressed in my PPGP I still
feel that I could discuss more in depth with my students. I think this is a great artifact for this
standard because it is in the performing aspect where it is harder to address what is wrong. As a
band director you are really using your error detection, for that, you need to apply your content
knowledge.
