Before, The Man
Before, The Man
Midtown was not the safest city of all, but crime rates
were dropping, exponentially I would say, all thanks to the
appearance of a new hero, Captain Justice, a monument of the
universe to what was good and fair.
Criminals, all of them, from the super, to the commons,
they all began to fee to other cities since his arrival. The
prisons were geting overcrowded.
In his blue and uniform cloak masterfully made to order,
his star in the chest showed all the evildoers that their time of
evil had ended, at the moment the greatest of all heroes
appeared to save us.
It was a day like any other when i was struck by a
meteorite when I was walking through the forest, and since
then when someone is in danger, my mind goes blank and I
change into him, I do not remember anything when I am
Captain Justice, even still, i am a big fan of him, just like my
son, little Jimmy Smith. Oh my God, I forgot to introduce
myself, my name is John Smith, I'm 35 years old, I have 2
beautiful children, and a single father, and I'm an accountant at
an insurance company.
Since she's gone and my little sister, Ellie who helps me
with Jimmy and Betty in exchange for a place to sleep while
she finishes her law school.
My wife has abandoned me and my children, I try not to think
about her, but it is difficult to have a daily reminder of all the
years we spent together
My sister Ellie hates her. Actually, she does not like
anyone other than my children, who obey her even more than
me, they are good children, but they blame me for abandoning
their mother, I do not blame them, we were both guilty of
situation, I think.
I work in an office in the city center, it's not such an
exciting job, but it pays the bills, yes, until a certain amount of
time, every summer we do some family programming,
camping in the woods, or a beach, always, every summer,
everyone we, always together, now no more, because of her
disappearance and something.
We always traveled when we could, Midtown was very
violent, so I bought a house in the countryside, but everything
changed thanks to me, that is to say, thanks to Captain Justice,
when the meteor fell the house caught fire together, my wife
abandoned us the same day, that was a horrible day for me.
We were in March already, and I was going to work like
any other day, when once again I lost control of my body, there
were some victims in some immediate danger nearby, plus a
job for Captain Justice.
When I wake up, I see I'm at the top of a building, in the
building where I work, by the way, how Captain Justice is
good to me, saved people in distress yet flew here so I would
not be late.
No one had noticed that I came on the terrace, no one ever
noticed me, in the end not even my wife.
The office was very hectic that morning, the heroes'
interventions here were always balanced with those of the
villains, but since the arrival of Captain Justice, out-of-town
companies could count on the safety of Midtown now.
This brought us great business, as an insurer, almost
everything passed by my table, until it seemed that only I
worked there, and, for a change, my desk was again jammed
with paperwork to be reviewed and analyzed, and until noon.
Again, another day was passing, when I saw everyone
running to the windows, I interrupted momentarily to give in
to curiosity, someone hit my shoulder and my glasses fell to
the floor and to improve I hear the sound of glass breaking
under someone's feet, I complain, but no one seems to hear,
until I see the shapes in front of me running, all moving away
from the windows.
Soon I feel only one hand pulling me away from the
window, and as soon as I'm far enough I hear a crash, maybe a
truck exploding in the streets below, or some villain attacking
again, after a long time. An immense shadow covers the
entrances of light in the building, many cry in despair, but I see
nothing, neither who pulled me to safety, nor who projected
such a great shadow.
And again, the same crash, the shadow that covered the
facade of the building disappears. The screams of the people
get even louder, I did not understand the reason, until I felt the
wind on my face, a strong wind that blows only on the 45th
floor, the floor where I work.
The attack
The hero
The revelation
The rescue.
The end
