OFFERING HELP

DEFINITION
Offering help is a way or an expression to suggest or offer help to someone who needs
it. The purpose is to offer assistance for someone who is doing something politely.
There are two kinds of offering help: informal offers and formal offers. Informal offers
are used when you talk with someone close to you and formal offers are used when you
talk with someone are older or whose position is higher than you. There are two kinds
of respons offering help: refusing and accepting. If you want to refuse someone’s offer
you have to refuse politely, and if you want to accept someone’s offer don’t forget to
say “thank you” to them.
LANGUAGE FEATURES
1. Using modal auxiliaries like may, can & would
(ex : can I help you?)
2. The use of question sentence
(ex : do you need help?)
3. The use of pronouns
(ex: would you like some help?)
4. The use of verbs
(ex: can i help you in learning English?)

ACCEPTING AN OFFER
There are some words that used for accepting help or offer from someone. Example:
 Thank you.
 Yes, please.
 I’d like it.
 That would be very nice
 I appreciate that
DECLINING AN OFFER
Here are some examples of declining an offer of help from someone:
 No, thanks.
 No, I really won’t. Thank you.
 Not for me, thanks.
 No thanks, I am not.
 Thank you for your kindness, but I can do it myself.

DIALOGUE
Yuka : Hi, Mada. You look so pale. Are you okay?
Mada : Hi, Yuka. I’m not okay. I have a stomachache. I’m looking for some medicine.
Yuka : Let me help you to look for it. (offering help)
Mada : Yes, please. Thank you, Yuka. (accepting help)
Yuka : You’re welcome Mada. Is there any other thing I can do for you? (offering
help) Maybe take you to see a doctor?
Mada : You’re so kind but no need, thanks. I can do it myself. (declining help)

DIALOGUE!!!
 Instructions : Please, make a short dialogue using the expression of offering help
based on these situation below! After that, practice the dialogue in front of the class
with your pairs.
 Situation 1 : Your classmate finds some difficulties to do her English assignment. You
want to help him/her. Your classmate accept your offer.
 Situation 2 : Your mother finds some difficulties in making cupcakes. You want to
help her. She accept your help.
 Situation 3 : Your friend finds some difficulties to do his/her homework. You want to
help him/her. Your friend accept your help.
 Situation 4 : Your father is repairing his car. You want to help him. Your father
decline your offer.
