Floormap3Di Operating Manual Rev 4.0 Section 5 – Example Calibration Traces
Introduction
This section of the operating manual provides example calibration traces for all possible plate and
coating thickness combinations.
It is important that all calibration information detailed in Section 2 Data Acquisition is read and
understood before reading this section. Section 2 should also be referred to when required.

Included in each example calibration trace to follow there is a Suggested Minimum Operational
Threshold (SMOT). These are recommended threshold levels for viewing MFL data in the
Floormap3Di Data Acquisition software. For example, if an inspection is performed on a 6mm thick
plate with 4mm of coating, then to help eliminate any unwanted spurious defects and make the
viewing of true defects easier, the threshold could be set at the recommended threshold of 25%
(defects under this 25% are readily visible if required by lowering the threshold level). It must be
understood that the SMOT levels are for use in ideal conditions.

Floormap3Di Operating Manual Rev 4.0 Section 5 – Example Calibration Traces
Identifying an incorrect calibration is important to ensure indications are not sized incorrectly during an
inspection. Below are some examples of incorrect calibrations:
If a calibration is performed on the top and bottom side of a reference plate in the opposite direction
(i.e. the Floormap3Di performs a calibration scan from 80% to 20%), similar images to Figure.1 and
Figure.2 are displayed. It can be seen from the figures that:
x The MFL calibration peaks decrease in amplitude over the X-Axis (Figure.1)
x The STARS calibration peaks decrease in amplitude over the X-Axis (Figure.2)
x The calibration trace lines do not lie on each of the four detected MFL and STARS
peaks (Figure.1 and Figure.2).
Please refer Successful Calibration Attributes in Section 2 Data Acquisition for details of what a
successful calibration should contain.

Floormap3Di Operating Manual Rev 4.0 Section 5 – Example Calibration Traces
If a calibration is performed only on the bottom side of a reference plate in the opposite direction,
similar images to Figure.3 and Figure.4 are displayed. It can be seen from the figures that:
x The MFL calibration peaks decrease in amplitude over the X-Axis (Figure.3)
x No STARS calibration signal is visible (Figure.4)
x The 60% and 80% MFL top and MFL bottom signals are identical (Figure.3)
x The calibration trace lines do not lie on each of the four detected MFL and STARS
peaks (Figure.3 and Figure.4).
Please refer Successful Calibration Attributes in Section 2 Data Acquisition for details of what a
successful calibration should contain.

3. Correct Top Side Defect Scan but Incorrect Bottom Side Defect Scan
If a calibration is performed correctly on the top side of a reference plate, but incorrectly on the bottom
of a reference plate (i.e. the scan is performed in the opposite direction on the bottom side of the
reference plate), similar images to Figure.5 and Figure.6 are displayed. It can be seen from the
figures that:
x The MFL top calibration signal / trace is correct (Figure.5).
x The STARS calibration signal / trace is correct (Figure.6)
x The MFL bottom calibration peaks decrease in amplitude over the X-Axis (Figure.5) –
The peaks cannot be seen in this case but they do exist further along the X-Axis.
Please refer Successful Calibration Attributes in Section 2 Data Acquisition for details of what a
successful calibration should contain.
