Your Name: McKenna Foxworthy Date of Activity: March 22, 2018 Faculty name: Bev Bias
For my first community service/professional activity, I helped in the SILC lab at the start of the
semester. I assisted Yvette and other SILC lab faculty members in organizing for the upcoming
semester. Specifically, two other students and I moved the mannequins to their appropriate
places, organized NG tube kits, and sorted through large bags of supplies donated by previous
students. My role was also to spend time organizing previously used supplies and discarding
what could no longer be used. The purpose of this time was to aid and assist in preparing the
SILC lab for the semester so that other nursing students would be adequately supported and
equipped to learn. Secondly, I attended a Basic Life Support (BLS) course and learned how to
aid in giving life-saving CPR to all ages. The purpose was to renew my BLS and to refresh my
skills—which will be utilized in the near future. My role was to learn further about BLS and to
BLS for Healthcare Providers at CPR2U - 3333 E. Grant Road à 4 hours on March 22, 2018
Both of these experiences were incredibly valuable to me. In regards to my SILC lab experience,
I learned the important role that Yvette and other SILC lab staff members play in the learning of
students. I was unaware of the amount of work and organization that takes place behind the scenes,
and I am grateful for how hard these individuals work to support the learning of students like
myself. More specifically, I was able to witness the individual efforts poured into my education
and I am encouraged by the people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make my
learning possible. Secondly, the Basic Life Support class was incredible—primarily due to the
instructor. The instructor, Robin Keller, is a nurse and directed her teaching specifically towards
nurses. This experience was valuable and will assist me in future opportunities. Understanding
BLS and having the knowledge to perform CPR will also equip to for emergency circumstances,
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why
or why not? (Describe)
other students in this course. I believe that volunteering and assisting in the SILC lab is a
wonderful experience and truly allows for students to reflect on their experience at the College of
Nursing. It is an eye-opening thing to see the role that others have played in my education, and
for that reason I would recommend this to any student. I would also recommend the Basic Life
Support (BLS) class to any student. Specifically, the instructor I had was phenomenal. As a nurse
herself, she knew exactly what to teach, how to teach it, and how to provide relevant nursing
anecdotes. Because BLS is needed in the nursing field, I would also recommend this opportunity
*Note: I was unable to obtain the signature for BLS, but have the BLS card I received after
taking the class. Unfortunately, Yvette was tricky to track down in the SILC lab, but the
signature will be obtained prior to evaluations.
