N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Samantha DaLessio Date of Activity: 3/2/18 (BLS), 4/9/18 (Narcan), 4/26/18

(DNP Study) Faculty name: Mary Oconnell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

I attended a basic life support training course through the American Heart Association. The

interactive components consisted of using the CPR mannequins with compressions and various

other maneuvers involved in both adult and child CPR. There was also a video presented to us

from the American Heart Association on basic standards of CPR, and the importance of it. My

second activity was with the Southern AIDS foundation. They hosted an Overdose prevention

and Naloxone training class. My role was of a student as I was taught vital information about

substance use prevention, treatment, and specifics on Narcan administration. My third activity

was a research study involving Telehealth training with DNP students at the University of

Arizona. I was assigned to do an assessment on a patient and then give report to a nurse

practitioner using this technology.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

The BLS activity was four hours long and it was held in the Pima Institute off Grant Road in

Tucson Arizona. The Narcan demonstration was 1.5 hours with 30 minutes of questions at the

end and was located on Euclid Avenue in Tucson Arizona. Finally, The research study was two

hours and was at the College of Medicine.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The BLS training was a very valuable experience for me, and is very relevant to my future career

as a nurse. Not only is it required in hospitals to have this specific license, but it is important to

stay up to date on new evidence based practice protocols. Continuing, the Narcan demonstration

was extremely valuable to me as a future healthcare professional. The opioid epidemic is

something that we have to deal with on a daily basis in healthcare, and it is essential that individuals

are trained on this basic lifesaving medication. Finally, the telehealth research study was a very

interesting experience as it allowed me to communicate with a future nurse practitioner using a

new type of technology. Technology is constantly advancing in healthcare, and it was important

for me to get this experience.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

I would definitely recommend these specific community experiences in the future. Through my

BLS training, Narcan class, and telehealth research study, I was given an avid background in

imperative aspects of the healthcare world. The importance of BLS in hospitals, the significance

of knowing how to properly administer Narcan, and the future technological shift in healthcare

are professional experiences that I will always take with me as I continue with my nursing

career.
