ABSTRACT

 THE PROJECT IS BASED ON DESIGN OF

AUTOMATIC PICK AND PLACE WHICH IS
CONTOLLED BY SIEMENS BASED PLC KIT.
 THE DESIGN MAINLY CONSIST OF DC MOTOR
OPERATED CONVEYOR BELT ,DIFFERENT TYPE
OF SENSOR (CAPACITIVE AND INDUCTIVE) AND
ROBOTIC ARM.
 THE PROGRAMMING PART IS DONE IN SIMATIC
MANAGER SOFTWARE.
WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION ??

 Today all production units are looking towards

more production by utilising their existing
assets and man power.
 This can happen when one can effectively
utilize his present existence with modern
facilities.
 Which can be easily achieved by implementing
automation process in the Industry
AUTOMATION APPLICATION

 Power generation :- Hydro, coal, gas, oil, shale,

Nuclear, wind, solar
 Transmission :- Electricity, gas, oil
 Distribution :- Electricity, water
 Process :- Paper, food, pharmaceutical,
metal, processing, glass refinery, oil
 , cement, chemical,
& gas
 Manufacturing :- Computer aided manufacturing
(CAM), flexible fabrication, appliances, automotive,
aircrafts
 Storage :- Elevator, harbor,
deposits, luggage handling
 Building :- Heat, ventilation, air
conditioning (HVAC), access control, fire, energy
supply, tunnels, highways,....
 Transportation :- Rolling stock, street cars, sub- urban
trains, busses, cars, ships, airplanes, satellites,...
PROGRAMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER
PLC SYSTEM
WHY PLC ??
 PLCs were invented as replacements for automated
systems that would use hundreds or thousands of
relays, timers, and drum sequencers.
 Often, a single PLC can be programmed to replace
thousands of relays.
 Programmable controllers were initially adopted by
the automotive manufacturing industry, where
software revision replaced the re-wiring of hard-wired
control panels when production models changed
OTHER METHODS
 PNEUMATIC CYLINDER
 MICROCONTROLLER APPROACH
 ELECTRO-PNEUMATIC APPROACH
COMPONENTS
ROBOTIC ARM
 B696 Robotic arm is used
 Wrist motion of 120 degrees
 An extensive elbow range of 300 degrees, base rotation
of 270 degrees, base motion of 180 degrees, vertical
reach of 15 inches, horizontal reach of 12.6 inches, and
lifting capacity of 100g
 Features 5 motors with 5 axes of movement
DC Geared Motor
 150 RPM 12V DC geared motors for robotics applications and for
our “Pick and Place” project we would be using this motor
 Very easy to use and available in standard size. Nut and threads
on shaft to easily mount on chassis and internal threaded shaft
for easy connection it to wheel.
 Specifications
 6mm shaft diameter with internal hole
 125gm weight
 150 RPM base motor
 No-load current = 60 mA(Max), Load current = 300 mA(Max.)
Sensor
1.Capacitive sensor-which sense metallic as well as non
metallic bodies.
2.Inductive sensor-which sense only metallic bodies
without touching the bodies
Conveyor belt-
It consist of two or more pulley with a continuous loop of
material
Length is 120 cm and width is 10 to 15 cm

CONCLUSION
The different applications where automation is used are the Industrial robot, Autonomous research
robot, Domestic robot, Home Automation, Laboratory automation, Integrated library system,
Database administration and automation,Building automation, Artificial intelligence,
Automatedattendant, Automated guided vehicle, Automated highwaysystem, Automated pool
cleaner, Automated teller machine,Automatic painting (robotic), Pop music automation,Robotic
lawn mower and Telephone switchboard. Thesegive a clear indicative of the development of
automation. The need for automation-i.e. why it is better than manuallabor can be seen under1.

1. Replacing human operators in tasks that involve hard physical or monotonous work .

2. Replacing humans in tasks that should be done indangerous environments (i.e. fire,
space, volcanoes, nuclearfacilities, underwater, etc) .

3. Making tasks that are beyond the human capabilities such as handling too heavy loads,
too large objects, too hotor too cold substances or the requirement to make things too fast or too
slow .

4. Economy improvement .

Thus we see that using automation is a powerful tool

which can be used to replace man effectively.
