Multicultural Lesson Plan

Grade3

Content Area: Language Arts

 Standard: Research to build and present knowledge.

7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions,
demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.

Text Types and Purposes

1. Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
a. Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational
structure that lists reasons.

 Objective: Students will be able to identify different foods from other cultures as well as write two
paragraphs on their favorite dish that was presented and a brief history on the dish with a 95%
degree accuracy.

 Materials: Recipes that require no more than 4 ingredients (from classmates family members)
Ingredients, Microwave, Toaster Oven, Paper Plate, Aprons, Utensils (all provided by teacher)
Library Computers, Research website such as Google.com, Pencil, Paper.

 Procedure:

Assess Prior Knowledge: I will begin with asking students to share their favorite dish that their
family makes as well as any favorite dishes from other cultures. (Auditory)

I will ask students to write a few sentences on what they love about their culture (Visual) and then
pass them around to let other students read their notes. (Auditory)

Anticipatory Set: I will take the class to the library to find two pictures of food items from different
cultures. (Visual)
I will assist each student in printing out pictures (Tactile)

Introduce: The students will bring in their recipes for us to make together as a class.(Visual)

Guided Practice: I will help the students in making the dishes, as well as toasting and
microwaving if needed. (Tactile)
After making the dishes we will then return to the library where I will assist each student in finding
a brief history on one of the dishes we prepared. (Tactile) (Visual)

Independent Classroom Practice: Students will then sit and write 2 paragraphs about what they
learned about the history of the dishes they helped make. (Visual) and their opinion on what their
favorite dish was.

Assessment: Check the paragraphs to check for understanding of the assignment and to make
sure the student can state an opinion about their findings.
