A total and a partial condenser set-up will be used in an open steam fractionating column.

500
kmols/hr of a subcooled liquid (q=1.20) containing 40% methanol, 60% water by mole will be
fed to the column. The bottoms product from the reboiler shall contain 98% water by mole while
the distillate is to contain 96% methanol by mole. 100 kmols/hr of a saturated liquid is taken off
somewhere in the column such that the composition is 0.75 mole fraction methanol. The
fractionating column is to be designed using a reflux ratio which is 1.5 times the minimum
reflux ratio and a Murphree liquid efficiency of 70%. Determine:

a. distillate, bottoms and side stream rate

b. location of feed and side stream plates
c. actual number of stages
d. % methanol by mole in the liquid and vapor products leaving the feed plate
