Objective
● Students will be able to recognize that each and everyone is different and know that it is
okay.

● Students will be able to answer questions regarding the book and recognize the moral of
the story through class discussions with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed
❖ The book Chocolate Me! By Taye Diggs
❖ White sheets of paper (To create illustrations on and write about their traditions
and what makes them different)
❖ Writing utensils (Crayons, markers, colored pencils)
❖ Construction paper (To decorate their illustration)
❖ Magazines ( To decorate their illustrations)
❖ Safety scissors
❖ Glue (To glue down the construction paper and magazine cutouts)

Procedure
1. Introduce: Begin by showing the cover of the book and asking what you think the book
will be about.
2. Read: Teacher reads the book aloud to entire class.
3. Discuss: The class will sit in a circle and they will have ten minutes to write down in
their notebook their opinion on the questions below. After the ten minutes we will have a
class discussion, students can share their opinions to the class.
● Question 1. Why was the boy teased?
● Question 2. Is it okay to make fun of people?
● Question 3. How do you think the boy felt after getting teased?
● Question 4. Is it okay to make fun of people for being different? Why or Why not? How
would you feel if you were teased?

Activities
1. Students actively work individually on creating their own self portrait and encourage to
illustrate what makes them different, it could be image wise, clothing or hobbies they
enjoy.
2. Students will work in small groups of four or five and five sentences on why it is okay to
be different.
3. Evaluation Teacher will review the group's work and end with a class discussion
recognizing diversity.
