1 Product
Product Description
This environmental data sheet is valid for 1 ton of CEM II/A-LL 42.5 R (Byggcement Std PK) bulk ce-
ment, composed of the average composition of cements manufactured by Cementa AB in 2013 in the
plants Slite and Skövde. The considered cements are in accordance with EN 197-1.

Basic Materials
In accordance with the standard EN 197-1, Portland limestone cement CEM II/A-LL is composed of 80 to
94 % clinker, 6 to 20 % limestone and 0 to 5 % minor constituents. Additionally, about 5 % of gypsum,
hemihydrate or anhydrite are added for setting regulation.
No substances according to the “Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for Authorization”
are used in cement.

Manufacture
The manufacture of cement comprises two main steps: clinker burning and cement grinding. Before
clinker burning, the raw material for clinker, mainly limestone, clay and marl, is extracted from quarries,
homogenized and ground to a fine powder. In a rotary kiln the raw material powder is burned to clinker at
a temperature of 1450 °C. Besides CO2 released by fuel combustion, this process emits CO2 from lime-
stone decarbonation. After cooling down of the clinker, it is ground to cement with the addition of gypsum
and anhydrite, as well as other additives (figure 1).

Data collection
Process data from the plants have been collected for each of the cements considered.

Methodology
The LCA results have been produced using an EPD generator for cement (i-Report) by PE-international.
Calculation model and background data for upstream processes are an integral part of the EPD genera-
tor. The model has been established in accordance with the PCR of the Institute Construction and Envi-
ronment e.V. (IBU).
The input values are based on the sum of plant specific data related to the total production amount of
clinker or cement of both plants.

This includes 66.0 kg CO2-eq. from the incineration of wastes in clinker production. According to the polluter pays principle (EN 15804) that
would be assigned to the production system, which has caused the waste. In the EPD the CO 2 contribution is not subtracted. This is to ensure
comparability across countries of calculated global warming potentials for cements even if the used secondary fuels in other countries do not
have waste status.
