ELECTRICAL MACHINES LAB – I

Objective: This Lab explores all the possible design connections of a DC machine and it also
experimentally obtains the characteristics and thus observes the performance of different DC
generators and performs tests on DC machines to derive their efficiency.

The objective of this part of the lab exercise is to construct a Simulink model for types of Dc
generator
The student is required to Draw the external Characterstics oof each type of Dc machines
Using results from Simulink or Pspice
and verify the result using equation of the external Characterstics

For Odd IDS only

LOAD TEST ON DC SHUNT generator USING OPEN LAB SYS

Aim:
To conduct load test on DC generator with shunt excitation and plot the typical
characteristics using open lab systems.
You will change the load to get different values of Vt vesus IL
And then draw the external characterstics

Procedure: Load Test

1. By varying the generator field rheostat, the generator has to be brought to its rated
voltage. Corresponding reading of voltmeter and ammeter are noted down.
2. By varying the load gradually, the corresponding reading of voltmeter and ammeter are
noted down at regular intervals.
Where,
Vt = generator voltage in volts

I= Load current in Ampere

Nm = Speed on shunt motor in RPM
T = Torque in Nm
If : Field Current
R : load resistance
Fill the following Table
Vt Ia IF Nm R Efficiency

Result:
The load test on DC shunt motor was carried out to determine the efficiency and plot the
typical characteristics.
Post-lab questions for load Test on Shunt Motor
1. How to reverse the direction of rotation of DC shunt Genetator ?

2. What are uses of DC Shunt motor?

3. What happens if the field circuit of a DC shunt Generator is opened?

Second Part
Try to calculate the constant K which equal
K:2p/2a * Z/2*pi
from ratings
And verify the experiemental result with theoretical
For ex
Vt=E-Ia*Ra
And E=K *IF*W

The modle you chose on Simulink will be on of the following depends on your ID
if your ID %3==1 model 1
if your ID %3==2 model 2
if your ID %3==0 model 0

Armature controlled DC MOTOR

. Armature Controlled DC Motor Theory The components are shown in the figure below. The
armature (part that does the work) is located on the rotor, while the field (part that creates the
magnetic field ) is located on the stator. The field source is constant and hence the strength of
the field does not vary; this means that Ke and Kt do not vary. The armature is fed from a
variable DC source, va. The resulting current, ia causes some voltage to be dropped on Ra and
La, the remaining voltage, eb is the Aback emf@ which appears across the ideal armature
winding. It depends on speed and is given by: eb = Ke.w. The armature current also produces
the developed torque, which is given by: TM = Kt.ia. The product: eb.ia is power which is
converted into mechanical rotation and is equal to developed torque, TM times the speed, i.e.
eb.ia = TM.w. This power is fed to the load which is comprised of Inertia J, damping B, and a
load torque TL. The stiffness of the shaft is being neglected for the time being

It's required to show the variable speed operation using variable armature voltage on separetly
excited Dc Motor
Choose one of the model depends on your seat NO

The modle you chose on Simulink will be on of the following depends on your ID
if your ID %3==1 model 1
if your ID %3==2 model 2
if your ID %3==0 model 0

Connect Variable DC supply

1/3 Vrated for 10 s
Then 2/3 V rated on the next 10 s
Connect Vrated after this you can do this in Simulink by
or you can use repeating sequence block

You will control the speed by controlling the armature voltage

And You are required to plot the speed versus time and justify the graph

Wish You all of Luck :D
