Lesson: Unit lesson 3, math, Organize Categorical Data

Materials: hot dog pictures, hamburger pictures, post it notes.

I can:
● I can organize, represent and compare data using pictures, circles and matching.
● I can compare data and find how many more and how many fewer.
Vocabulary:
● Compare and category
Lesson:
● Define the word compare: Looking at two or more objects to see if the have the same or
different qualities.
● Define category: a group of objects, people or things that have the same characteristics
● Tell the students that we are going to have a pretend cookout with hotdogs and
hamburgers. In order to have our cookout we need some hot dogs and hamburgers. I
have some numbers in this bag. One student will draw the amount for hot dogs and one
student will draw the amount for hamburgers.
○ Have students draw. (Numbers 1-10) Depending on what the students draw put
the amount on the board. Have the amount disorganized.
○ Ask the students what would make it easier to tell how many hotdogs and
hamburgers we have?
○ Once it is organized have the students say what one has the most and what one
has the fewest.
○ Then have one or two students come up to the board to find out the difference
between the hot dogs and hamburgers.
● When we compare two groups of things we look at them together. Ask a student or
students to come up with a sentence that compares the hotdogs with the hamburgers.
● (if time) Do a review of sorting:
○ Have the students go around the room and look for things that have been sorted.
Once they have found an object(s) they can put a sticky note on it. (Dismiss as
numbers 1-5, 6-10, etc.)
○ Once they are all done have them come back to the carpet and talk about what
they have found.

Exit ticket:
● What is data?
● What are two things that we compared?
