Guidelines 2018

STUDENT HANDBOOK
PGDM/PGDMHR/PGDMB&FS
Course Code: Summer Internship Program
Course Credits: Three Credits

Theme:

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) forms an important component of education at International
Management Institute, New Delhi (IMI, New Delhi).

At IMI, New Delhi, students undertake an 8 to 10 weeks internship at an organization during the
intermediate period between close of Term III and commencement of Term IV.

The internship, requires the students t o undergo the rigor of professional environment both in form
and substance. It offers direct exposure of business reality, its intricacies and dynamics to the students.
In the process, it provides the students with an opportunity to satisfy their inquisitiveness while
exposing them to technical skills. It also helps them acquire social skills by drawing them into
communication with outside professionals for seeking
information.

For proper co-ordination and ensuring an organized and smooth conduct, every student will be
directed under the guidance of faculty (faculty mentor) at the Institute. Apart from the faculty
mentor(s), a representative of the industry / organization during the course of SIP would also guide
the students and assist the faculty mentor in monitoring the student's progress.

Types of Assignments and Report Submission:

SIP is a vehicle for introducing students to real-life work culture, which cannot be simulated in the
classroom. The assignments which the students undertake must necessarily be those of direct
interest to the host organization.

The students are encouraged to take up assignments which are multi-disciplinary, involve team effort,
are mission and goal oriented, and are time bound. It is to be noted that solutions to various problems
confronted in the assignment might be open ended, involving an element of decision making in the
face of insufficient data and uncertain parameters.
The following reports in their respective formats are required to be submitted by the students latest by
the dates mentioned as under.

APPENDIX-C: Survey Guidelines

As many of the students would be required to do surveys for their summer projects. Here are a few
broad guidelines for the survey methodology, which the students need to keep in mind.

1. When developing and designing questionnaires, care needs to be taken to ensure that :

 analysis plan is considered while formulating the questions in the questionnaire

 double barrel questions (questions intending to elicit response on more than one issue) are avoided
 questions are effective, clear and unambiguous
 appropriate use is made of a structured or semi-structured approach
 question sequence is logical
 bias is eliminated
 structure and length of a questionnaire suits the intended audience
 questions are focused and relevant
 the final document is user - friendly

2. Data Collection Methodologies

The most appropriate and cost-effective method of data collection may be chosen in
accordance with the specific requirements of a particular survey. However, the primary data
collection methodologies we employ are face-to-face, telephone and self-completion (paper and
Internet based) research.
i. Face-to-face Research: The choices are: Face-to-face interviewing, conduct hall tests, street
surveys, specific location and in-home interviews. Particular uses
of face-to-face research include;
 Product testing
 New Product Development research
 Pricing studies
 Design/ packaging research
 Concept testing
 Exit surveys
 Pre/ post advertising awareness/ effectiveness
 Usage & attitude surveys
 Customer satisfaction studies
 Pre-press campaigns

 Pre & post PR effectiveness

ii Telephone Research
Telephone research can be stand-alone or the co-instrument to the Face – to – face
research. It is highly useful where respondent is busy and unreachable / unapproachable
otherwise. Interviewers have to be trained at communicating through telephone.
Particular uses of telephone research include:
New Product Development research
 Pre & post advertising awareness/ effectiveness
 Usage & attitude surveys
 Concept testing
 Customer satisfaction studies
 Pre-press campaigns
 Pre & post PR effectiveness
 Editorial research
 Post exhibition research
 Panel research
iii. Internet based Self-completion Research
With improvements in technology and Internet software, the rising penetration of
computers and the increased ability of users this method of research has become
increasingly popular. In addition, given the technically driven environment in which
we live, there is an expectation from respondents that they should be able to complete
a survey electronically. Particular advantages of Internet based research include:
Response is immediate and closed data can be analysed promptly following
collection.
Studies have shown high response rates and quality open-ended responses.
This methodology is not only used for assessing web site and Internet related issues
but can be used to research many areas, potentially restricted only by target sample.
iv. Paper based Self-completion Research
There are a variety of ways in which self-completion questionnaires may reach their
target audience;
-By post, fax, or e-mail.
-By hand for self-completion
Particular uses of self-completion include Reader profile surveys, Editorial research.
