A composite bar is formed from two materials A and B as shown in Figure 1. Material A has
an elastic modulus of 30000 MPa while material B has an elastic modulus of 10000 MPa. The
stress strain relationships for the two materials are shown in Figure 1. The stress strain
relationships are the same in tension and compression. Determine:

(i) The moment to cause the extreme fibre in material B to reach its yield stress of
100 MPa.
(ii) Calculate the position of the neutral axis, the top fibre stress in material A and
the moment when material B is fully yielded. Draw the stress and strain
distribution.
