To Whom it May Concern

Lois H. Barbour and Cheryl Sparks Scholarship
W.T Cooke Elementary
1501 Mediterranean Avenue
Virginia Beach, Virginia 23451

To whom it may concern:

I am interested in receiving the Lois H. Barbour and Cheryl Sparks Scholarship offered by the
PTA of W.T. Cooke Elementary School, where I attended school fourth through fifth grade. I
am very thankful to this school for providing me with a great academic foundation and attitude
towards learning that I continued on through the rest of my education.

I currently attend Ocean Lakes High School as a senior. Throughout my four years, I have kept a
rigorous class load of honors and advanced placement classes while participating in
extracurriculars and staying involved within my community. Freshman year through junior year
I was a member of the Math and Science Academy in which I conducted many research projects
and took classes catered toward the STEM field. I have received the Academic Achievement
Award as well as the Principles of American Citizenship Award for Honesty for maintaining a
high integrity and good grades. Doing this, keeping my GPA above 3.5 and staying involved led
to my acceptance into the National Honor Society in my junior year, through which I have
excelled in community service. This year I have participated in many trash clean ups around
Virginia Beach, volunteered at nearly every race hosted in VB, and began volunteering at
Disabled American Veteran Events. Aside from community service I have engaged myself in
sports and clubs. My sophomore year I received a varsity letter in field hockey and for track and
field. During my senior year I wanted to focus on my grades and applying for colleges so I did
not participate in any sports, however I wanted to stay involved within my school sports
community so I volunteered as the Boy’s Volleyball Statistician for the whole season. During
my junior year I also participated in an interactive program called “The Every 15 Minutes
Program” which teaches the dangers of influenced in distracted driving. Within the Program I
was the leader of a small group in which I organized meeting dates and kept everything running
smoothly. Additionally, in the summer before my sophomore year I was accepted into the No
Barriers Youth Climate Change Academy which allowed me to travel to Alaska to conduct
research on climate change with the National Park Service. Doing this as a way to expand my
involvement within the Project Green Teens Club, the Academy allowed me to participate in
environmental seminars and expeditions. Staying involved in high school has been crucial to my
development as a student and as a person.

After high school I plan to attend college, with a strict academic routine as I will be double
majoring in statistics and environmental science. By dedicating my time to studying for each of
my classes, my goal is to keep my grade point average above 3.5, in hopes of an easier transition
if I plan to receive a postgraduate degree. Although I may change majors from environmental
science to a broader science degree, combined with statistics, I will be exposed to applied
thinking which I can utilize in the scientific field. The statistics major should also allow me to
make more valuable connections within my desired job and allow me to adapt to society’s rapid
development of technology. To expand on this, either during my freshman or sophomore year I
plan on studying abroad, as traveling stands as a large part of my life and having a cultural
understanding is crucial to development as a person and within relationships in business. Aside
from within the classroom I also plan on participating in extracurriculars to expand my
knowledge within my field.

I have been accepted into my top choices, the University of Oregon, Colorado State University,
and Virginia Tech. I also received admission from Old Dominion University. Currently I am
deciding between the University of Oregon and Virginia Tech. I received a 3-Year Advanced
Designee Army ROTC Scholarship from Oregon and an Emerging Leaders Scholarship from
Virginia Tech for choosing to participate in the Corps of Cadets if I attend that school.

After college, I plan on entering the United States Army as an officer. With excellent physical
standing and academic record I will either pursue my army career as a ranger or as an explosive
ordnance disposal specialist.

With all of my experiences from high school, I am excited for my future in college, and I hope
that this scholarship will allow me to get there. Thank you for considering me for this
opportunity.

Sincerely,
Samantha Revolinsky
