Topic: Folklore/ Fiction


Objectives:
A. Students
B. will be able to understand linear plot through the following of “Courage the Cowardly Dog”
C. After quick review over linear plot
D. completion of worksheet

Standards and Benchmarks addressed:​ ​8.6 a) analyze linear plot developments to determine whether
and how conflicts are resolved, b) analyze how the central characters qualities influence the theme of
a fictional work and resolution of the central conflict

Action

Phase 1: Engage
Capture student attention, activate student prior knowledge, stimulate thinking, raise key questions, etc. 1

Students will give me a list of the linear plot and their definitions

Phase 2: Explore
Allow students to observe, record data, isolate variables, design and plan experiments, create graphs,
interpret results, develop hypotheses, and organize their findings.

Students will give me their explanation as to why you need to know this

Phase 3: Explain
Introduce laws, models, theories, and vocabulary. Guide students toward coherent generalizations, and
help students understand and use scientific vocabulary to explain the results of their explorations
1. Give students a brief explanation of Ms. Hennington while they pass out
worksheet
2. Give students an explanation of linear plot

3. Direct students to the video and explain as they go

Phase 4: Elaborate
Provide students opportunity to apply their knowledge to new domains, raise new questions, and explore
new hypotheses. May also include related problems for students to solve.
Next year, literary analysis is more in depth.
Phase 5: Evaluate
Administer formative assessment (although checking for understanding should be done throughout the
lesson)
Students will turn in worksheet and give one thing they learned or remembered.
