❖ Optometric Physician  
➢ Education: 
■ Complete a 4-year bachelor’s program with a pre-med/biological sciences emphasis  
■ Pass the Optometry Admission Test (OAT)  
■ Complete a 4-year optometry program to obtain a professional optometric degree (O.D) by 
the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) in a particular state  
■ Take and pass all of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exams including:  
● Part I: Applied Basic Science 
● Part II: Patient Assessment and Management (PAM) 
● Part III: Clinical Skills 
● TMOD: Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease 
● CPDO: Continued Professional Development of Optometry  
● ACMO: Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry  
■ License; complete a 1-year pre-registration placement with a registered optometrist after 
licensure 
➢ Job Description: 
■ Perform vision tests and analyze results  
■ Examine, diagnose, treat, and manage visual defects, eye diseases, and injuries  
■ Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, or medications  
■ Clearly explain eyecare instructions to their patients and answer patients’ questions 
■ Evaluate the overall health of the patient (i.e. diabetes) and refer patients to other healthcare 
providers as needed; decide on the best course of treatment for a patient  
■ Optional: Work as postsecondary teachers or do research in optometry colleges

❖ Dispensing Optician 
➢ Education: 
■ Obtain a high school diploma or its equivalence and receive on-the-job training; optional: 
complete a postsecondary education program at a community college or technical school  
■ Complete a 2-year associate’s degree or a 1-year certificate by the Commision on Opticianry 
Accreditation (COA)  
■ Complete an optician apprenticeship; optional: attain a license 
■ Take and pass the American Board of Opticianry and National Contact Lens Examiners 
exams (ABO-NCLE)   
➢ Job Description 
■ Keep track and receive prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses  
■ Help choose eyeglass frames and lens treatments (i.e. tints or anti-reflective coatings) and 
decide on which materials and styles are necessary based on preferences and lifestyle  
■ Make adjustments and repairs to eyeglass to ensure a good fit  
■ Clearly explain how to care for their eyeglass frames or contact lenses  
■ Order and maintain inventory  
■ Optional: teach optometrists at a community college or graduate school

■ Knowledge on sales and inventory management  
■ Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; friendly

➢ Education: 
■ Take a few or all of the following courses in high school or in college:  
● Communications (i.e. business)  
● Accounting/Medical Office/Medical Coding softwaring  
● Medical Terminology 
● Office procedures 
■ Obtain a high school diploma or its equivalence  
■ Possess basic computer skills (i.e. word processing and spreadsheet); proficiency with 
scheduling and accounting softwares  
■ Optional: obtain post-secondary training or a certificate and associate's degree programs 
designed for medical office receptionists  
➢ Job Description: 
■ Greets and assists visitors for appointments or questions  
■ Create an orderly environment  
■ Performs clerical tasks (i.e. scheduling, filing, and billing)  
➢ Characteristics: 
■ Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; customer service  
■ Time management skills

❖ Bookkeeping Clerk  
➢ Education: 
■ Obtain a high school diploma or its equivalence 
■ Complete an accounting associate’s or bachelor’s degree program, including:  
● Practical and theoretical aspects of accounting  
● Financial/Cost/Managerial accounting  
● Introduction to business and federal taxation  
■ Pass the Uniform Certified Public Bookkeeper Examination by the American Institute of 
Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB)  
■ Abide the CPB Code of Professional Conduct  
➢ Job Description: 
■ Use ledgers and spreadsheets to verify bills that have been paid or still owe 
■ Record transactions: post debits (cost) and credits (income)   
■ Administer payroll 
■ Purchase new inventory  
■ Send company invoices  
■ Produce financial statements and other reports from financial data for supervisors, 
managers, and any organizations 
➢ Characteristics: 
■ Knowledge in different bookkeeping software programs  
■ Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; customer service; honest and 
trustworthy  
■ Enjoys working with computers, money, and the internet 
■ Prepared to update schools
