ACTIVITY COMPLETION REPORT

I. Title: Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Time

II. Location: Calubian National High School
III. Summary:

Reading is one vital skill in one’s learning development. It is through this that
comprehension is enhanced and established among learners. Thus, Education sectors are always
in unison to support programs and modify practices so as to augment the great benefit this skill
will serve.

National Reading Month (formerly known as English Month) is a nation-wide event

participated by schools in all levels. This activity aims to elevate one’s appreciation and awareness
of how important reading is, along with the significance of the English language. Consequently,
the English teachers and student-officers of Calubian National High School, Calubian, Leyte had
arranged an activity which was commonly known as DEAR Time or Drop Everything And Read
Time.

DEAR Time is an adapted program which aims to reel in students’ interest for reading.
This endeavor gives students an allotted time in a day to do nothing else, but read. And so, this
program was applied by the school. This was practiced every Wednesday of the entire month of
November in lieu of the National Reading Month Celebration. Bearing in mind the status of most
students in CNHS, reading materials were already provided. And so as not to interrupt any
discussion, DEAR Time was only applied during recess where students maximize 15 minutes of
their recess, from 9:30-9:45 in the morning. English Club Officers would go from room to room
distributing photocopies of the short selections having at least 4 or 5 comprehension questions that
students would answer after reading in a ¼ sheet of paper. To facilitate the students during DEAR
Time, the teacher who’s in charge for the second period was asked to monitor students to finish
the task on time. Afterwards, the EC Officers would again roam from one room to another to gather
the papers for checking. After having checked, the papers were given to the English teachers to
record the scores.
