Grace Lutheran Church 1 W. Montgomery Street ~ Johnstown, NY 12095-2409 The Rev. David Almleaf, Pastor ~ June 2018 Junew ‘This month we transition from our normal program of activities to our summer schedule, Sunday June 3" we will enjoy our Sundaes on Sunday following worship. Make your own Sundaes and hot dogs will be available in the fellowship hall ata cost of $1.50 cach. We aren't raising any money, just having a good time together, Dear Members and Friends, ‘The next Sunday on June 10 our Sunday School will conclude their program by presenting the message at worship, Following worship the Christian Education Committee will sponsor a picnic featuring hot dogs and burgers provided by the council. ‘The summer worship schedule begins on Sunday June 17% through and including Sunday September 2". Worship will be at 9:15 a.m, Worship at 10:15 a.m. resumes on Sunday September 9" with a dish to pass for everyone following worship as we welcome everyone back to our fall activities. ‘This fall Sunday Schoo! will be using a different format. Many churches located in areas of the country that are not growing have dealt with the decline of Sunday School age children by instituting a multi-generational format so as to avoid the problem of only one or two students present from a particular age group. This kind of problem happens especially over holiday weekends and bad weather days. ‘Once a month we will have a multi-gencrational day which will also include families who are able and the adults who are presenting the topic. Each month will have its’ own topic, so while it may seem like less activity itreally involves much thought and planning to do it well, Some churches have been using this format for over a decade in rural low density populations with much success, We thought we would give ita ty and see how it might work for us. Confirmation classes will continue each Sunday at 9 a.m. with the exception that we will include them in the multi-generational class cach month. Confirmation classes are for those in 6" - 8" grades. First communion class will be taught weekly over seven weeks as we grow closer to Lent and East We will contact the families as we confirm the dates, 2 ately Pastor David Almleaf Altar Flowers June/July. 06/03 - George & Marlene Slingerland 06/10 - Darleen Gaugler David Gaugler - Special Arrangement 06/17 - Maryland Wamer 06/24 - Karen Ryder ‘The Clo Family 07/01 - Greta Davis Dorian & Tabetha Angus 07/08 - Maryland Warner Kathy VanValkenburgh O7/15 - Maryland Warmer 07/22 - Maryland Warner 07/29 - Maryland Warner Please note: The cost of altar flowers is $38.00 unless you share a Sunday then they would be $19.00 each vase. The “Wall of Money” will be up in the narthex until June 24". In case you're wondering what the Wall of Money is, it is a series of envelopes with a dollar amount on the outside. You choose an envelope, put the designated dollar amount in it and leave it in the box in the narthex. Inside the envelope is an index card with some interesting facts about Houston and Texas, as well as the name and some facts about a youth member or adult who will be going to Detroit. We are asking that you pray for that member or adult as we travel to Houston, while we are at the Gathering and as we travel home. Believe it or not, prayer is a very important (if the not THE most important) component to attending this event. It is because of the prayers from all of you that have made these events possible for us. It’shard to believe, but weare only days away from leaving for Houston for the 2018 ELCA National Youth Gathering, Attending this event will be five youth (Schuyler Claes, Emily Frasier, Zachary Ropeter, Donovan Smith and Abby VanValkenburgh), three adults (Clyde Smith, Heidi Ropeter and Barbara Frederick) as well as two young members of our congregation who will be serving as volunteers (Megan Frasier and Alyssa Davis). While we are in Houston, we will be posting short videos on the church Facebook page daily, so please make sure you like the Grace Lutheran Church Facebook page so that you can see what we are doing while in Houston. On Sunday, July 1*, we will again be blessed to serve as communion assistants. If you want to see what our Sunday morning worship service is like while at these events, please stay after church on Sunday, July1st to see the livestream (and worship with us while we are there!). Quilt Group Update On Sunday, April 29th, with the help of the congregation, 31 quilts were blessed. The quilts were packed up, bar coded with our congregation’s Lutheran World Relief id number, and delivered to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clifton Park for the LWR Ingathering. In case you were wondering: What exactly is an Ingathering? An Ingathering is a local collection of Quilts and Kits during which groups in the surrounding area combine all their completed Quilts and Kits onto a truck or box car that delivers them to one of LWR's warehouses. Typically, Ingatherings take place once each year, usually around the same time and in the same place. Once the quilts are in the LWR warehouse, they are packaged with quilts from other congregations and shipped to where they are needed. Here is a link to an interesting video of this process: https ://Iwr.org/videos/quilt-kit-pipeline At the quilt blessing, we asked for a donation of $3 per quilt. And we were blessed with donations totaling $215. THANK YOU! And special thanks to our Youth Group for their generous contribution! This money was sent to LWR for their Quilt and Kit Shipping Fund which covers the cost of shipping the quilts from the Ingathering to the warehouse and eventually overseas. We have already completed 2 quilts for next year’s Ingathering. If you would like to help with this effort, we generally meet the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 10 to 2. In our long-term projects in Peru, students receive Personal Care Kits that help their families learn better hygiene, which also helps strengthen their dairy and cheese livelihoods.
