When the preparation of a textbook continues over a number of years, and draft
versions are fiel d-tested in a number of institutions, the debt of the authors becomes
extensive. Those w ho have helped us have provided many di百 erent kinds of assist
ance : not only the more usual checking, typing, indexi ng, and proofr eading services,
but also the w riting of thousands of Japanese hand written draft stencils-many
of them on an extremel y demanding time schedule. Some have arranged for the
duplication of prel iminary drafts and have cheerfully packed, hauled, and mailed
out hundreds of copies to participating schools. And the recipients have generousl y
provided inval uable criticism of the text, based both o n personal reaction and o n
observation o f the reaction o f their classes t o its use. This text is trul y the result of
unusual cooperation, and the authors are sincerely grateful .
