AE 172 Introduction to Aircraft Performance

HW#1,
Due 10 March 2006, Friday

Assistant: Serpil Kaya.

1. Consider the NACA 23012 airfoil. Surface and mean camberline contour formulas for
some NACA series airfoils are given in document (NACA_Airfoils.pdf)

a) Plot, on one-to-one x vs. y axes, the upper and lower surface contours.
b) Plot the mean camberline on the same axes.
c) Plot the thickness distribution (thickness vs. x).
d) Calculate the thickness ratio of the airfoil.
e) Calculate the camber of the airfoil.

2. Consider that you are designing a finite wing with an aspect ratio of 6 and span
efficiency factor of 0.9 using the NACA 2412 airfoil, for which cl vs. a curve is given
on page 63 of the text book. Calculate the lift coefficient that this wing will generate at
an angle of attack of 5o.
