Applications versus Databases

An Essbase or Planning application is a management structures that contains one or more databases.
An Essbases database is a multidimensional database. The name was derived from "Extended Spread Sheet dataBA
Values in Essbase are stored at the intersection of dimensions. Think Rubik Cube

Dimension and Members

Dimensions define characteristics of the data. Dimensions are defined by a hierarchy of members and parents.

Essbase databases for Hyperion planning have six required dimensions:

Period
Year
Scenario
Version
Entity
Account

Understanding the different types of connections

Shared Connections
Shared connections are stored in a central location and are available to multiple users through the Smart View Panel.
You cannot add, edit, or rename shared connections, but you can save them as private connections, which you can edit

Private Connections
Private connections are those that you create by saving a shared connection to your local computer or by entering a URL
that is not configured for shared connections.
When you create a private connection, it becomes the active connection.
Creating Private Connections
1 Launch Excel
2 Navigate to SmartView ribbon and select Panel
3 From the Smart View panel, click the arrow next to "Home" Icon, and then select Private Connections.

4 From Server drop down listing select Essbase - EssbaseCluster - 1

5 Expand Application you wish to access and right click on Essbase Database name.
For Example, UMHSCons Application, TrialBal Database
6 Select Add to Private Connections

7 Enter User Name and Password to establish a data source connection

8 Enter name of connection. Such as as UMHSCons_TrialBal
Tip: <Application>_<Database>. This standard convention will allow you to share files with others
SmartView Formula Functions

Several functions are available:

Function Syntax Description

HSGetValue HSGetValue("Connection","POV") Retrieves values from a data source for th
HSSetValue HSSetValue(Data Value,"Connection","POV") Sends data values to a data source for the
HSCurrency HSCurrency("Connection",Entity;Value") Retrieves the currency value of the specifi
HSDescription HSDescription("Connection",Dimension#") Displays the description of a specific dime
HSLabel HSLabel("Connection",Dimension#") Displays the default member label for a sp
HSGetText HSGetText("Connection","POV") Retrieves cell text from a data source.
HSSetText HSSetText("Cell Text Comments","Connection;POV") Sends cell text to a data source

You can create functions by two methods -

1 Manually

Hard Coded
Example from UMHSCons Application

Requires correct syntax indicating Dimension name and Dimension member selection, separated by # surrounded by

Note the equation for cell reference for each dimension has a leading quotation and ampersand "& and a trailing quota

#NEED_REFRESH
Note: For both manual methods, ommitting a dimension will result in the default being selected.
Be sure you understand the impact of making no selection for any given dimension.
2 Using Function Builder

From SmartView Ribbon, select Functions, Build Function

Select application from Select Connection drop down list

Select desired formula from Select Function drop down list

Click on first Dimension in Select Member dialog box and click on Select Member button to the right
Select a member for each desired dimension by using dimension selection box at top left.
Click OK and then Click on Add to Function button

Click OK button. The formula will appear in the cell you had selected.

#NEED_REFRESH

Advantages of Function Building versus Ad Hoc Analysis

Do not need to use Vlookup functions

Structure of data pulled from the source will not change
Able to use inherent Excel formatting directly on formula cells

Disadvantages of Function Building versus Ad Hoc Analysis

Need to know all the dimensions in the database

Need to know the correct syntax
Need to know the members you wish to utilize if building manually.
