Internal Project: Tube Rack Stress Analysis Report

Description
A Study was conducted using Inventor Professional FEA Simulation Package to analyse the load

bearing capacity of Plate Rack for xxx workshop.

The Plate rack assembly consists of IPB 160 (All Vertical column members and base (bottom).

For a conservative analysis the addition vertical supporting members for the main load bearing

beams (The main load bearing beam span is approximately 1500mm wide and this is supported

by additional vertical tubes which further subdivides the main beam to shorter spans ) are not

considered in both analysis methods.

The actual material used for construction is A36 or higher grade steels with Yield Strength of

250MPa. Again, for a conservative approach in the analysis Mild steel was used for beams and

columns in both methods. Analysis methods were performed using a line load of 30Tonnes upon

individual load bearing beams. All the load bearing beam are typical with a span of 1500mm and

therefore the FEA was performed in one beam with fixed constraint at one end.

In order to ensure safety of the design, following conditions to be met.

 Von Mises stress in both loading cases < Yield Strength of the beam (450MPa)
 Beam deflection in both loading cases < L/360 (4.17 mm)

Conclusion
A comparison of the loading results is shown below.

Yield Stress = L / 360 ( L= Beam

450Mpa Line Loading (29420 N) Span, 1500mm)
Von Mises stress
(Mpa) 398 4.17

Displacement (mm) 1.62 4.17

Von mises stress in both loading cases < Yield Strength of the beam
Beam deflection in both loading cases < L/360
Since both conditions are met the beam can be loaded up to the values shown above.
