CHEMISTRY ASSIGNMENT SK015
Topic : Chapter 3 : Periodic Table
A. Contents

This assignment consists of two sections A and B

Section A – compulsory (20 marks)

Section B – CHOOSE 1 from two questions given (10 marks)

Total Marks – 30

This assignment accounts for 15 % of your final score for this semester

B. General Guidelines

For questions requiring you to explain…..

You need to provide further support for your statements to obtain full marks

Example If your answer written is;

Effective nuclear charge increase across period.

You need to further elaborate WHY or HOW effective nuclear charge increases across
period.

C. Submission of assignment

1. The submitted assignment can either be in hand-written or typed written.

2. Completed assignment can be sent to your lecturer by uploading it in your Google

Classroom or by hand to your tutorial lecturer. (depending on your lecturer’s
prefences)

3. You need to include references i.e books or websites from that you refer in completing
your assignment at the end. * At least 1 reference must be included.

2
SECTION A: Answer all of Question 1

1. (a) The table below shows the proton numbers for five elements labelled P, Q, R
and S

Element Proton number

P 11
Q 15
R 16
S 19

Based on the information in the table, arrange the following elements in order
of decreasing atomic size. Explain in detail. [12 marks]

(b) If electron/s in atoms P, Q, R and S are either removed or added such that we
obtained P+, S+, Q3- and R2-, what will be the descending order of size of
these ions ? Explain your answer. [ 7 marks]

(c) The size of anions are larger than their neutral atoms. Give a reason [1 mark]

SECTION B: Choose ONLY ONE of the two questions in this section.

2. The first four successive ionization energies of two hypothetical elements X and Y are
shown in the table below ;
Ionisation X Y
Energy (kJ/mol)
First 900 1200
Second 1750 2500
Third 14900 19900
Fourth 21000 26000

(a) Based on the information, predict the group/s to which X and Y belong in the
periodic table. Explain your answer. [ 3 marks]

(b) Compare the size of X and Y atoms. Which is smaller X or Y? Give your
reasons.
[3 marks]

3
(c) Suggest a possible pair of elements for X and Y. [2 marks]

(d) Explain the fact that the values of ionization energies increases as electrons are
successively removed. [2 marks]

3. The sketch graph below shows all the successive ionization energies of an element Y.
Based on the graph,

(a) To which period in the periodic table is element Y located? Give your reason
[2 marks]

(b) To which group does Y belong in the periodic table? Explain your answer
[3 marks]

(c) Explain why there is a gradual increase in ionization energies from the 2nd to
the 9th electron but a sharp increase for the 10th electron. [2 mark]

(d) i) Write the formula of the oxide formed when Y reacts with oxygen.

ii) Will this oxide be basic, acidic or amphoteric? Show relevant chemical
equations to support your answer. [3 marks]
