Heat straightening procedure:

a) maximum steel temperature and procedure of cooling allowed;

b) method of heating;

c) method used for temperature measurements;

d) results of mechanical tests carried out for the process approval;

e) identification of workers entitled to apply the process.

Key points to consider during heat straightening are:

- Grind out all notches prior to heat straightening.

- Monitor, and ensure that the steel temperature during heating does
not exceed 650°C.

- Artificial cooling shall not be allowed until the steel has cooled below
315°C.

Note:

1. Heat straightening shall not be permitted when the air temperature is


below -5° C or

when winds are excessive unless suitable heating and hoarding is provided.

2. Burning/cutting torch tip should never be used for heat straightening


and radiant or contact ceramic electrical heaters are not recommended.
