education intensives: ‘Painting and Drawing with Debo-
rah Thompson’ July 23 – 26 and ‘Zero to Sixty Ukulele
Intensive’ July 30 – August 3.

day intensive. Through a series of exercises students will
explore how to gather visual information while learning
the fundamentals of light and form, pictorial space and
colour theory. The four days will include critiques and
discussion and students will be encouraged to pursue self-
directed painting projects.
Have you always wanted to play the Ukulele? Well this
‘Zero to Sixty Ukulele Intensive’ is for you! Learn the
basics of how to tune, hold and strum followed by some
simple chords and strumming patterns. By the end of the
course you’ll have some catchy songs under your belt to
share around the campfire.

Innovation in forestry typically suggests using new
technologies for forest management or forest products
that enhance economic opportunities. The new BC Com-
munity Forest Association (BCCFA) Resource for Small
Tenure Holders is about innovation in relationships. The
guide offers examples of lessons learned and a framework
for developing relationship-based approaches which go
beyond the legal requirements for small tenures.
The guide was developed for managers of small ten-
ures in BC: community forest agreements, First Nations
woodlands licences and woodlot licences, who are work-
ing closely with local communities, both Indigenous and
non-Indigenous and with provincial, federal and munici-
pal agencies.
“Developing social licence for forest management
activities in your community means investing time,
resources and personal effort. Yet the benefits of durable
and strengthened relationships with local Indigenous and
non-Indigenous people are worth the investment,” con-
cluded Jennifer Gunter, Executive Director of the BCCFA.

A family tradition nearly 20 years old continues to grow as
families increasingly embrace the great outdoors as part of
quality time together. Timed to coincide with Father’s Day,
‘Family Fishing Weekend’ events take place June 15 – 17.
In the Kootenays, participants have a choice of six spe-
cial events combining fishing, learning and socializing.
They will join an estimated 40,000 participants across
the province planning to enjoy Family Fishing Weekend
independently or as part of an organized event.
Family Fishing Weekend began with a dozen events focused in
the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan and
has grown to offer events in nearly every corner of the Province.

 Participation in Family Fishing Weekend events is free,
with hands-on tutorials available for beginners or those
looking for a refresher. Loaner rods, reels and tackle are
provided for those who do not have their own gear. The
events also offer opportunities to learn about fishing gear,
share freshwater and saltwater fishing tips, learn about
environmental stewardship and the tradition of recre-
ational fishing. “One round can make a difference”
Fishing licence requirements are waived for the
weekend, meaning Canadian residents can fish licence
free over the three days, although some requirements
remain in effect. Details are posted on the BC Family
Fishing website and the Fisheries and Oceans website.
“Coordinating events over the Father’s Day weekend is
an opportunity to remind people fishing is often a social
activity. It’s not only the solitary angler casting on a lake.
It’s a way to spend quality time with other people in the
outdoors,” says Family Fishing Society of BC President
Wayne Saito. “We see all generations at Family Fishing
Weekend events from the very young who will be hold-
ing a rod for the first time to parents and grandparents
proudly sharing their own fishing tips and techniques
with the next generation.”
Family Fishing Weekend events to be held in the
Kootenays: Nakusp, Arrow Lakes June 16; Nelson, Cot-
tonwood Lake June 16 and June 17; Revelstoke, Wil-
liamson LakeJune 17; Trail, Champion Lakes Provincial
Park June 16; Fort Steele, Kootenay Trout Hatchery
June 16; Cranbrook, Idlewild Lake June 17.
Events are supported by the Family Fishing Society
and organized by Fish and Game clubs, the Conser-
vation Officer Service, municipalities, community

ArtWalk 2018 looking
for aspiring youth artists
The Nelson and District Arts Council is gearing up to
celebrate the 30th anniversary of ArtWalk and we want
to do that with you! There will be two fun filled family
friendly opening nights Friday, June 29 and Friday, July
27, as well as an all ages street dance party for closing
night on Friday, September 7, in partnership with the Nel-
son Road Kings.
ArtWalk has been supporting local artists for almost
30 years and we want to ensure that this continues for
another 30 through the support of local youth artists. We
are looking for aspiring youth artists (18 and under) to
take advantage of this offer. Any young artist is asked to
bring their ‘hang ready’ art to Jordan Martin at the Nelson
and District Youth Centre before Monday, June 25.
The NDYC location will be listed on the 6000 ArtWalk
brochures that will be everywhere all summer long. This
is a wonderful opportunity that the NDAC and the NDYC
are proud to collaborate on. ArtWalk is also looking for
poets of any age who might want to participate in this
year’s events. We are asking for poetry submissions before
Monday, June 18. These poems will be printed and lami-
nated to hang on trees (Poet-trees) on the ArtWalk walk-
ing map route.
The Nelson and District Arts Council is committed to
promoting and encouraging a thriving arts community.

soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acre-
age should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the
pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treat-
ment facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are
a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading
