Exercise 1

Tantalus was beloved by the gods so beloved that one

he was invited to eat with them! as in return tantalus
invited the gods to have a meal with him. Before the
meal he killed his son cut him into pieces and cooked
him to give him to the gods hoping that they would
eat it. But the immortal gods knowing it was his son
didn’t touch it only Demeter absorbed by the loss of
her daughter ate the shoulder of Pelops (the son of
tantalus). Zeus but the resting pieces together trying
to make him live again but he missed the shoulder so
he put a piece of ivory in place. And so Pelops came
back to life and he was very angry about his father so
he decided to run away from the palace immediately.

In the meantime an oracle declared to Oenomaus that he will be killed by his son-in-law, when he
heard that he refused to let anyone marry his fair daughter Hippodamia. Many still tried to marry
her, to those the king made a chariot-race but when the opponent almost won the king killed them.
among the boys there was also Pelops that tried to marry Hippodamia but when he saw the heads of
the boys before him stuck on Oenomaus door he was filled with fear.

So he asked Mytilus (the keeper of the horses and chariot of the king) to help him as promise to give
him half of the kingdom if he would help gain Hippodamia, Mytilus agreed but not so easily he
wanted one more thing. He wanted the first night after the race to spend with Hippodamia. After
that Pelops agreed he made the pin of the wheels in wax so when the king is on full speed it would
melt and the king would die.

So being said so being done, the king died and

Pelops took Mytilus the same day to the sea. And
said see the sea? That is your kingdom and kicked
him down of the giant hill they were standing on.
Before Mytilus reached the ground he cursed
Pelops that for 5 generations their family (Pelops
and Hippodamia’s) would finish each other’s.

After the wedding Pelops organized the Olympic games in honour to Zeus for bringing him back to
live, and each four years it would take place.

Exercise 9

a. Zeus was the god

b. The wars ended when the games started but when the games ended the wars started again
c. The attic calendar had interest in ordering the sequence of years. As in other Greek cities the
name of on of the yearly magistrates, at Athens known as the eponymous archon was used to
identify the year in relation to others. The sequence of years was matched to a list of names.
Instead of citing a numbered year, one could locate a year in time by saying that some event
occurred "when X. was archon". That allowed the years to be ordered back in time for a number
of generations into the past, but there was no way of dating forward beyond ordinary human
reckoning (as in expressions such as "ten years from now").
