Product Description
The type of product that our business will primarily focus on is prosthetic limbs. We have realized that

over the years that the number of amputees have increased and that the evolution of prosthetic limbs has

yet to reach the point where amputees can feel whole again.

Outcome/ Vision
Our vision is to produce prosthetic limbs that are so precise in its design that it seems as a replica of that

part that was amputated. Our products will be well engineered so that once that limb is replaced; it not

only looks like a replica, but it’s also user friendly. Being user friendly implies that once our product is

installed on the missing limb and is connected, the user will have full control over that part. He/she will

be able to walk normal without a limp, participate in sports (basketball, football, tennis, etc), and carry

out their daily routine without the worry of feeling indifferent or out of place in society.

Details of the Business

The set-up of this type of business is very simple as there will be several departments that will have its

own responsibilities. Our main suppliers will be Tank-Weld Metals until we have enough sponsors and

investors that can offer us a wider variety of tools, equipment, and raw materials. The operation of our

business will be done to specifications and we will produce them in a timely manner after the request has

been made. We will work alongside organizations that may have a high demand for our products.
Deming’s 14 Principles

1. Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service, with the aim to become

competitive, stay in business and to provide jobs.

The purpose of this company is to provide prosthetic limbs for the Jamaican market. In doing so

we first would like to focus on providing human-like prosthetic limbs that will help our clients

not to feel out of place. We will have our resident prosthetist do the measurements and fitting for

all our clients. In the Jamaican market there are a few businesses that provide this service, hence

we have a low number of competitors. For our business we plan on doing delivery within a 10

mile radius of where we are located and also for first-time amputees within the Kingston region

(as we are located in Kingston), we will visit their homes to take the measurements for the limb

that has been amputated. For first-time amputees that are located outside of Kingston, we will

have a central meeting place, where the measurements can be taken. The idea behind this is to

avoid first-time amputees having to travel long distances or travel at all in their condition.

Furthermore, we will allow for payment to be done in installments, therefore our clients will be

able to practice and get use to their prosthetic limbs in no time. These strategies that have been

outlined above will enable our company to stay in business. In starting our business we plan on

having a doctor, a prosthetist and three porters on board along with a receptionist, a cashier and

an auxillary staff of two people and also the chief executive officer (C.E.O)of the company.

Therefore, we will have a staff body of ten (10) people.

2. Adopt the new philosophy. We are in a new economic age. Western management must awaken to

the challenge, must learn their responsibilities, and take on leadership for change
This hierarchal structure is believed to promote leadership for change as each worker is in direct

dialogue with the CEO.

3. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. Eliminate the need for massive inspection by

building quality into the product in the first place.

Our company will only be distributing these prosthetic limbs therefore, to achieve quality prior to

inspection will be tedious for our company to control. However, to overcome this problem our

company plans on having the specifications of how our product should be made, and also the

checks required addressed in the contract between our company and the manufacturer. Thereby

we will have some control of the quality of product we provide for our clients.

4. To minimize the total costs, a relationship will need to be established with institutions that have

interaction with amputees. Once this relationship has been established, a recommendations can be made

based on the needs and desires of each potential client. A visit to the institution can then be organized

where all interested persons can view the product, obtain quotes and have measurements taken. After

which delivery of the prosthetic limbs can be made to the partnering institution

5. In an effort to constantly improve the service of the company, quality of delivery and quality of the

product itself, a minimum standard has to be observed, which the company should not be below at any
point in time. As the standard decreases then training has to be considered for all employees. For delivery

of the product at costumer service standard for delivery time will also have to be implemented. For the

quality of the product itself, product research will have to be an on-going activity as, each individual will

have unique needs

6. As it relates to the distribution of prosthetic limbs constant on the job training will have to be an

integral part to having a successful business. The more experienced representatives will from time to time

be paired with new employees for them to have an idea of what is required on a day to day basis.

7. Since our business will be very precise and demanding, we will need to ensure that our management

and staff are of the same quality as our products and service. With that being said, our supervisors will

work with the lower level workers to ensure that our product quality is maintained in each of our

prosthetic limbs and that our customer service standard is kept high. The supervisors will walk each

employee through each step and ensure that they understand what is being asked of them and how precise

we want each part to be to the amputees. We will also implement a rule that allows each employee to walk

in at any given time when the supervisor is available to discuss their thoughts and ideas. We want to

ensure that we institute leadership in our managerial positions so that our employees are motivated to get

the job complete. By motivating the employees, our company will run efficiently.

8. In order for us to institute leadership, we will have to drive out fear within the company. John C.

Maxwell gives an example or an idea of how we can drive out fear, which was to fire persons for being

mean. As silly as it may sound, this method will work because persons within the company will realize

that not because of their position they can handle persons any way they want. Imagine an employee that is

working on a prosthetic leg or dealing with a difficult customer and he/she realizes that if we use a

different method approach or product assembly will increase productivity, if he/she decides to share their

ideas and the supervisor bashes them telling them that they are slacking off or that they’re there to work
and not to talk or share their opinions, this employee may become disgruntled and possibly agitated at

their behavior and possibly customer service will be dealt with in any given manner which in the future

can ruin our credibility as a precise prosthetic limbs distributions company. It’s better to have the

employees working under less pressure, not saying that there shouldn’t be a difference between them but

the difference should be so vast.

9. Breaking down barriers between departments will also improve our production within the company. If

there is a case where we expand and we decide to split up the company into section where each

department is responsible for a specific task we can produce a large amount of products in a shorter

period of time. But if for example we need to improve in our designs and our design department realize

that if we use a different shape hydraulic system or program for the prosthetic limbs, the head of that

department can easily walk over to the manufacturing or assembly department and share their ideas. By

doing so it eliminates the delay that may occur while waiting to have a major discussion between the

higher level managers. So by breaking down these barriers, we can gain more ideas and use them to

improve our design of the prostatic limbs.

10. With all these changes to the usual bureaucratic method of running a business, we want to also

eliminate slogans, exhortations, and targets for the work force asking for zero defects and new levels of

productivity. This will affect the work force on a whole. Yes we may want to produce precise prosthetic

limbs for amputees and yes we want them of high quality but sometime we have to realize that the quality

of the products are not only affected by the work force but by the tools and equipment as well. Yes we

will be demanding high standards but at the same time we as the high level manages need to ensure that

all the equipment are up and running and are fully calibrated to carry out each task. We want our workers

to work comfortably and not under pressure where they are likely to make mistakes

11. a. Eliminate work standards (quotas) on the factory floor. Substitute with leadership.b. Eliminate
management by objective. Eliminate management by numbers and numerical goals. Instead
substitute with leadership.
In terms of Deming's point of management which state that one should eliminate work standards
(quotas) on the factory floor. Substitute with leadership. One would encourage employees to
focus more on quality rather than output numbers by placing them into quality control teams.
Each team would have different roles and responsibilities that would in turn encourage workers
by making them feel a part of the decision making process. The impact of these teams would
increase and maintain our service's quality. For example, one team could be responsible for not
only offer standardized limbs, but would have them customize based on a customer's needs.
Another team would be in charge of follow up calls to conduct interview and get feedback from
the customers to see how they are enjoying the services. Additionally, another team could be
responsible for quality improvement, where they would go out to customers and bring back the
limbs to be improved at no cost, improving quality and also increasing customer satisfaction
which in turn creates a good image for the business.

12. (A). Remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right to pride of workmanship. The
responsibility of supervisors must be changed from sheer numbers to quality. (b). Remove
barriers that rob people in management and in engineering of their right to pride of workmanship.
This means, inter alia, abolishment of the annual or merit rating and of management by
objectives
Deming's point which state that one should remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right
to pride of workmanship will be dealt with by giving workers the right tools, right materials, right
processes and comfortable working conditions along with treating them with respect. Also
overtime will be allow to individual as long as there is work to be done. For example manual
would be developed on how to treat customers which would also allow room for person to
modified to suit the situation. Also a company car will be provided to bring the employees to the
clients.

12. (B) Remove barriers that rob people in management and in engineering of their right to pride in
craftsmanship.

In the company the ideal that includes appraisal systems that reward on bottom-line results and keeping
expense budgets down, and ignore customer satisfaction will be remove and replace by proper training
and excellent customer service.

13. Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement.

In the company vigorous programs of education and self-improvement will be establish in that
person in the company will be given a flexible work schedule so as to allow them to go on to
further their study with the knowledge that there job is safe. Also, activities will be put into place
that will aid persons in self-improvement. One such way in which this can be accomplish is to
identify the flaws that and individual have and help him or her to improve it. For example, if an
employee is not comfortable with speaking to persons, activities to improve his or her confidence
and public speaking skills will be implemented. Also if persons in the company are not qualified
in terms of have the requisite subjects the company would seek funding to pay for it. The
company may work in conjunction to heart to aid in person to improve their skills.

14. Put everybody in the company to work to accomplish the transformation. The transformation is
everybody's job.
In the company there will be a constant reminder of what of the come hope to accomplish which is to
provide prosthetic limbs that will be make the client feel satisfied. The service that will be offered would
encourage client to do business with our company.

What your business will offer that is an improvement on what is currently

being offered
