Description of the match:

Second Leg of the clash between Fenerbahce and Red Bull Salzburg played on Şükrü Saracoğlu. The match was held in
front of 32669 spectators who created a very hot atmosphere. Since the first leg result was 1-1, qualification was still open
for both teams even though the home side had a small advantage. This became even more obvious since Salzburg caught
off guard the home side and scored first. A quick equalizer and 2 other goals before half time created the final result. The
referee was challenged in some situations and this combined with the importance of the match and the pressure of the
crowd towards the referee, then match difficulty can only be described as “quite challenging.

REFEREE

1 Application and interpretation of the Laws of the Game / match control, tactical approach and management of the
game with the special situation(s) of the minute(s):

Comments:

The referee similar to previous performances presented a good Application and Interpretation of the LoTG. His foul
detection was good since he had a clear line and knew what a foul was and what a foul wasn’t. However the match
presented a total of 38 fouls which could be explained by the passion both teams had to qualify. Furthermore the referee
chose to let the game flow as much as possible and in fact the match benefited by his approach. Moreover he correctly
rejected a penalty appeal by the home side for handball since the hand is in natural position and the handball is not
deliberate.
st
Advantage rule was applied in a very good way something that became visible at Fenerbahce’s 1 goal when there is a
foul committed to #22 (FEN) and the referee immediately signals advantage and after about 30’’ Fenerbahce equalized the
match.
He should, however, be more prepared from the start of the match because he was caught off guard and missed a clear
foul for pushing right before Salzburg’s goal at min. 3’. Right before #26 scores while being alone #27 (RBS) clearly
pushes #22 (FEN) and throws him to the ground. The referee probably sees the situation but his position is not optimal
since he is following the ball.

The referee probably sees the situation but his position is not optimal since he is following the ball.
After a corner kick for Fenerbahce and with the ball bouncing to the ground it hit 13 (RBS) at his arm. Some
30’ home team players are asking for a penalty. However the referee correctly waives play-on since the arm is in
natural position and the handball is not deliberate.

2 Disciplinary control, management of players and team officials (bench) with the special situation(s) of the
minute(s):

Comments:

He had full control of the match issuing all the mandatory YC’s and warning verbally other players that he felt needed. He
was able to distinguish the more serious offences and punish them accordingly. He signaled all the cards while being
authorative and at the appropriate manner giving the impression to those who watched the game that he was in charge.
One point for improvement here. He should be stricter with fouls committed with hands and especially when they involve
the opponent’s head. 2 consecutive fouls indicate this.

Minute Description of the situation

25’-66’-
4 Mandatory YC’s. The 3 first for late challenges and the last one for shirt-pulling.
70’-87’
2 consecutive fouls committed by hands endangering the opponents well-being since they involves the head. At
72’-73’
least the first one committed by #16 (FEN) to #26 (RBS) needed a YC.

3 Physical Condition:

Good

Positioning and Movement:

+ Expected -

--- X --- Always close to the play, follows play at all times, and does not interfere with play
--- X --- Flexible diagonal system
--- X --- Able to anticipate the action
--- X --- Enters the penalty area when necessary
--- X --- Efficient positioning at set pieces / dead ball (e.g. corner-kick, free-kick, goal-kick)
Please describe any special situation(s) with indication of the minute(s) – mandatory if you tick “-“ (negative point) in one of
the above boxes:
Minute Description of the situation
He was close to play and had a flexible diagonal system, as expected. He was always careful not to intervene
with play. He should, however, not always follow the ball because this can narrow his view of some situations
Full time
as it happened at the goal Salzburg scored when he was following the ball and couldn’t watch the whole
penalty area.

4 Co-operation with assistant referees, additional assistant referees (where applicable) and fourth official:

Even though his assistants were not challenged at all, having from 1 offside each, co-operation within the refereeing team
was good. His assistants signaled all the offences that occurred in front of them and seemed to speak to him through the
micro in some other occasions.

5 Personality:

Given his experience, his personality was very good. He wasn’t influenced at all by the hot crowd that is putting the referee
under a lot of pressure and managed to have full control of the match. That helped him have the respect of all players as
well the technical staff of both teams.

6 General comments, advice on performance and personality:

Overall it was a really good performance with many good elements. He had some small points for improvement that
spoiled his general impression. Had he been more careful at the beginning of the match and gave the foul before
Salzburg’s goal then we could talk of a performance in the area of 8.4-8.5.

7 Points discussed in the report:

Positive points: 1) Foul detection.
2) Card and player management.
3) Co-operation with refereeing team.
4) Personality.

Points for improvement: 1) More awareness is needed especially at the first minutes of the match.
He should be stricter with fouls committed with hands and especially when they
2)
involve the opponent’s head.
He should improve his sprints training because in some situations he was starting
3)
to run a little late.

8 Assistant referee’s performance (please mention some important decisions with reference to the minute):

Positioning and Movement:

+ Expected -

X --- --- Correct offside decisions and good application of the “wait and see” technique
--- X --- Good positioning and movement
--- X --- Adequate alertness and good co-operation with the referee
--- X --- Reaction to incidents within his vicinity
--- X --- Efficient control at set pieces / dead ball (e.g. corner-kick, free-kick, goal-kick)

Comments:
st
The 1 assistant was challenged at all until min. 59’ when he disallowed a goal for Salzburg when after a shoot outside the
penalty area and a save by #1 (FEN) #10 (RBS) took the rebound but he was offside. It was a correct call even though not
that difficult to detect. Apart from that it was a normal performance with the usual fouls and corners/goal kicks.
Please describe any special situation(s) with indication of the minute(s) – mandatory if you tick “-“ (negative point) in one of
the above boxes:

The 2 assistant as well wasn’t challenged at all. He didn’t have any offside calls apart from one. At min. 33 after a shot by
#10 (RBS) outside the penalty area #5 (RBS) gets the ball but he is in offside position. He scores but the goal doesn’t
stand. Correct decision and moreover difficult to detect.

FOURTH OFFICIAL

10 Comment on the fourth official:

He wasn’t challenged at all since technical staff from both teams behaved with the most professional manner. All technical
procedures were executed with an appropriate manner.
