Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

Round of 16 in the FIFA U-20 WC 2013, match played between France (group A runner up) and
Mexico (group C runner up). The referee appointed was Alberto Undiano Mallenco from Spain, at
his second match after New Zealand – Uruguay in the group stage. The game was played in
Gaziantep at Kamil Ocak Stadium, in front of an attendance of 14,800, almost a sold out. Of
course, we must underline the presence of the home team fans. The match in its progress was
challenging for the referee, not that much for crucial situations, but because it was often intensive
and players were quite nervous. A crucial decision had to be taken in second half.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.)

Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referee’s decision

Penalty appeal by Turkey for an alleged handball of Foulquier (FRA). The
35’
decision to let the game flow is correct, it wasn’t a handball.
A penalty is whistled in favor of France, after a foul by Turan (TUR) on Bahebeck
64’
(FRA). The decision is correct, the contact is clear.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the
referee’s tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams
and players, teamwork etc.).
Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences!

Positive Points
1. Evaluation of crucial situations in area.
Teamwork: assistants reported fouls and they also helped the referee during the
2.
riot happened at the end of first half.
3. Knowledge of the LotG. Two YC were given in mandatory situations.

Points for Improvement

He should improve the control of the game and the management of players.
Sometimes he gave the idea to be in trouble, but we must also underline that the
1.
players were really nervous by themselves. A harsher approach in the first
minutes, having noticed the situation, maybe might have been more helpful.
The foul detection was satisfying but can be improved. Some minor situations
2. were missed. Also for this reason, the player were nervous in certain moments of
the match.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character)

Alberto Undiano Mallenco should work in order to be accepted more by
players. Maybe this match was a particular case, but during the game it seemed
that players were out of his control. A referee should always give the idea to
have everything under control. Anyway, at the end the major and crucial
decisions of this game were correctly taken. A performance of expected level
which can surely be improved.
