Wells Fargo Grant: Project Based Activities


Project Overview
Project Name: Directions Level: 3

Final Project/Culminating Activity: Students will use a mall directory and map
to find locations and give written directions to those locations .

Objectives:
• Student can give oral and written directions to locations in a building
• Students can use a building directory and map to find locations on a
map
• Students can follow oral directions to find locations on a map
• Students can work in pairs/groups to complete a task

Begin with a pre-unit Self-Evaluation:


There is a pre- self-evaluation to be used before the unit. It is also the same for a
post-self evaluation after students have done the activities in the unit and the
culminating activity.

Directions Vocabulary List
Prep and Warm-Up
• Divide students into groups
• Post chart paper in front of the class with the 3 categories listed on it in chart
form.
Activity
• Give students the three categories listed below
• Have them brainstorm vocabulary related to directions within a building
• Students need to write the words in the appropriate category.

• Students then share their list with the group and a class list is created
• Review vocabulary meaning as needed

School Map/ Pair Exercise
Prep and Warm Up
• Cut the directions in half

• Review clarifying questions before beginning

• Review the vocab. words from the list

• Students work in pairs.

Activity

• Student #1 reads directions #1 but does not show the directions to student
#2.
• Student # 1 follows the directions and finds the location.

• Students switch and student #2 gives directions #2 and student #1 follows


directions and finds the locations.

Extension
• Have students write or give their own directions using the map.

Informal Teacher Observation: Observe students as they work in groups. Observe


speaking and direction following skills.

School Map Directions #1

Directions: Read directions to partner, but don’t show your partner the directions.
They will give you the answer.

1. Go in the entrance. Go Right. It’s at the end of the hall. Answer: Office

2. Go in the entrance and turn right. Go to the end of the hall. Go left. It’s
across from room 140. Answer: Women’s bathroom

3. Go in the entrance and go left. Go to the end of the hall. Go right.. It’s at
the end of the hall. Answer: Testing Room

4. Go in the entrance. Go right. . Go left at the office. Go down the hallway .


It’s between room 142 and room 148. Answer: Room 144.

School Map Directions #2

Directions: Read directions to partner, but don’t show your partner the directions.
They will give you the answer.

1. Go in the entrance. Go left. Go to the end of the hall and go right. It’s on
the right. Answer: Teacher’s Lounge

2. Walk in the entrance and go right. Go left at the office. It’s on the left,
across from room 148. Answer: Candy Machine

3. Go into the school, take a right. Go to the office and go left. Go to the end
of the hall. It’s on the right. Answer: Men’s Bathroom.

4. Go in the entrance, go right.


Go to the office and go left. It’s between the
women’s bathroom and the exit.. Answer: water fountain

Prep and Warm-Up


• Divide students into group
• Review vocabulary list from Activity #1
Activity
• Give students a piece of poster paper. In groups students draw and label a
map of the floor that the classroom is on.
Wrap Up and Extension
• When finished, groups share with other groups
• The posters could be used for a bulletin board display

• Students write questions and answers using the map and the vocabulary list.
The classroom is the starting point for each of the directions.
Example: Where is the women’s restroom? Go out the door and take a
left, go past the elevators and take another left. It’s on the left.

Activity/Product #4:
Using a Building Map/Directory

Prep and Warm-Up


• Students talk with partner or group: “When you go to the mall, how do you
find the shop you want to go to?”

• As a class develop who, what, why, where, when, how, questions about
going to the mall. Have students copy the questions. Students then walk
around the room and ask each other the questions or interview their partner.

Activity:
• Pass out the activity sheet. Go over the map and directory together and do
some examples verbally before doing the actual worksheet.

• Talk about the compass and talk about the meaning of the letters.

• Students can give directions either N/S/E/W or right/left.

• Students can work alone or in partners

Wrap-up and extension


• Students role-play for the class an example of asking for suggestions-discuss
how to begin a conversation with a stranger.

• Students can google another mall, print it out and write directions to various
stores.

Directions: Work with a partner. Use the map and directory to answer the
questions. When you are finished check your answers with another pair.

9. Give directions from Sears to Kohls on the lower floor.

10. Give directions from JCPenney to Aladdins Castle.

Now take turns with your partner asking for and giving directions--tell your
starting point and where you want to go in the Mall.

vary). On the lower level, go out of the JCPenney’s. At the Dollar
Store take a right and walk straight ahead. At the Jimmy Johns
take a left. Aladdin’s Castle is next to the Jimmy Johns.

Warm-Up
• Students can work alone or in pairs
• Copy the map on 1 sheet and the Answer sheet on another
• Depending on your group you may wish to do an example before they work
on their own.

• Have students complete the worksheet and hand in for correction.
