Directions: Level 3
Final Project/Culminating Activity: Students will use a mall directory and map
to find locations and give written directions to those locations .
Objectives:
• Student can give oral and written directions to locations in a building
• Students can use a building directory and map to find locations on a

Directions Vocabulary List
Prep and Warm-Up
• Divide students into groups
• Post chart paper in front of the class with the 3 categories listed on it in chart
form.
Activity
• Give students the three categories listed below
• Have them brainstorm vocabulary related to directions within a building
• Students need to write the words in the appropriate category.
• Students then share their list with the group and a class list is created
• Review vocabulary meaning as needed

• Cut the directions in half

• Student #1 reads directions #1 but does not show the directions to student
#2.
• Student # 1 follows the directions and finds the location.
Extension
• Have students write or give their own directions using the map.
Directions: Read directions to partner, but don’t show your partner the directions.
They will give you the answer.
1. Go in the entrance. Go Right. It’s at the end of the hall. Answer: Office
2. Go in the entrance and turn right. Go to the end of the hall. Go left. It’s
across from room 140. Answer: Women’s bathroom
3. Go in the entrance and go left. Go to the end of the hall. Go right.. It’s at
the end of the hall. Answer: Testing Room
Directions: Read directions to partner, but don’t show your partner the directions.
They will give you the answer.

2. Walk in the entrance and go right. Go left at the office. It’s on the left,
across from room 148. Answer: Candy Machine
3. Go into the school, take a right. Go to the office and go left. Go to the end
of the hall. It’s on the right. Answer: Men’s Bathroom.

Creating a School Map
• Students write questions and answers using the map and the vocabulary list.
The classroom is the starting point for each of the directions.
Example: Where is the women’s restroom? Go out the door and take a
left, go past the elevators and take another left. It’s on the left.
Activity/Product #4:
Using a Building Map/Directory
• As a class develop who, what, why, where, when, how, questions about
going to the mall. Have students copy the questions. Students then walk
around the room and ask each other the questions or interview their partner.
Activity:
• Pass out the activity sheet. Go over the map and directory together and do
some examples verbally before doing the actual worksheet.
• Talk about the compass and talk about the meaning of the letters.
• Students can google another mall, print it out and write directions to various
stores.

Directions: Work with a partner. Use the map and directory to answer the
questions. When you are finished check your answers with another pair.

Now take turns with your partner asking for and giving directions--tell your
starting point and where you want to go in the Mall.

19. Give directions from Sears to Kohl’s on the lower floor.
(Answers will vary) Go out of the Sears and walk straight ahead. At
the Amarose Convenience store, take a left. Go North to Kohl’s.
20. Give directions from JCPenney to Aladdin’s Castle. (Answers will
vary). On the lower level, go out of the JCPenney’s. At the Dollar
Store take a right and walk straight ahead. At the Jimmy Johns
take a left. Aladdin’s Castle is next to the Jimmy Johns.
Culminating Activity
Finding a location Using the Mall Map and Directory
Warm-Up
• Students can work alone or in pairs
• Copy the map on 1 sheet and the Answer sheet on another
• Depending on your group you may wish to do an example before they work
on their own.
Activity
• Have students complete the worksheet and hand in for correction.
