Letter that I hoped I would never have
to write. It’s also an Editor’s Letter
that I don’t want to write. So, I’m
going to make it brief and let our
tributes to the greatest rockstar
of all time, which begin on p20, do
the job of conveying the pain and
grief we’re all feeling here at Kerrang!, knowing that
our hero has been taken from us.What I will say is,
as long as stereos exist, and volume knobs go all
the way to the right, Lemmy will
always be with us.The king is dead,

video imagery. I brought in Goonzi [Craig Gowans], who
plays in an awesome band called Bleed From Within and
is a wizard at video.That’s when we really started creating
something special. For London, we couldn’t use MiSTRIP,
as the stage was too big, so we brought in a video wall
and stairs.To be honest, we weren’t expecting it to look as

you think about Metallica, whether you like them or
not, their headline set at Reading last year was worth
seeing, you know what I mean?”
AND WHAT’S THE SECRET BEHIND
BMTH’S SPECTACULAR LIVE SHOWS?
JORDAN: “I’d like to think we don’t take ourselves
too seriously. It’s not too cool.We have confetti
and we have moments where Oli shouts,‘Fucking
fuck me in the arse!’ and moments where it’s really
emotional. It’s just a bit of everything, I guess.Yeah,
it’s a big rock show, but one where you’ve got the
emotional elements at points, and then big, fun,
dumb stuff at points, as well. It’s a weird combination
with our band, because we’ve got some really
atmospheric moments, some real subtle nuance
moments in the music and then there are bits which
are just plain silly.And I like that. I like it because,
though I’m not northern, it still has some of Oli’s
northern humour in there and sarcasm, too.”

and it’d be decent. I’m sure that there have been
headliners that have done a worse job than we could
pull together by tomorrow! But I think, in a year,

we get asked, we are going to do it, obviously.And if

kinds of electronic stuff in there, but I guess the over-

strive for, really: to write good songs.”

WHILE WRITING, PRODUCING OR SET-
DESIGNING WHERE YOU FELT, ‘SHIT!
THIS IS A LOT OF RESPONSIBILITY!’?
JORDAN: “Yeah, it was a lot to take on! I had all
sorts of mental anxiety and breakdowns.We both
did – we both went through a lot of shit. It’s a real
pressure thing, and there’s a lot to do.And there’s a
lot of people checking in.We wanted to try and beat
– well, not beat the last album [2013’s Sempiternal],
but at least do something we could feel proud of,
where there were no weak bits. So, we put in as many
hours and as much graft as we could.Then we had to
mix it as well, which was a whole different mind-set.
So, yeah, there was a lot of anxiety.Then Oli got
married about a month after.We were sat down in
Tuscany outside this amazing villa, eating dinner with
all of our wives and girlfriends, and heard [lead single]
Happy Song on the radio, and I balled my fucking eyes
out. It was a massive relief, like,‘Oh my God, this is
it – like, the last nine months of stress and it’s done.’

“I couldn’t actually play anything,” he laughed,

least try, Lem learned to play (although he confessed

the quality of his playing that drove him on, so much as
the feeling that it was his ‘thing’.

sort of drifted into – roadying for Jimi Hendrix for
a tenner a week. It was a job that entailed “watching

much the man’s skills “really pissed off

was important, however, was scoring
LSD for his employer.
“I’d go and get it, and he’d share it,”
Lemmy told us last summer.“Everyone
was on acid then, it was great. It was
really good stuff back then.”
Cool as all this was, it wasn’t Lemmy’s
band.And after that ended, Lemmy
began selling drugs as a way of avoiding
getting a real job (“I worked in a factory
mending washing machines when I was
younger,” he said.“I fucking hated it.They
wanted me to cut my hair, I said no, and
that was that”). But a chance encounter
in 1970 led to him joining acid-fried
space-rock lords Hawkwind – albeit in a
different role than he’d probably hoped
for. Sound and lights bloke Dik Mik had
left the band, and become Lemmy’s
¾EXQEXIERHXLITEMVWTIRXEJI[QSRXLW
seeing how much speed they could take
(spoiler: lots). Eventually, Dik Mik decided
he wanted to rejoin Hawkwind, but only
on the condition he could bring his new
mate into the ranks. Lemmy turned up to
practice and demanded to play guitar.
“I went to get a job as a guitar player, but
it turned out they didn’t need one,” he told
writer Joel McIver in his book Overkill:The
Untold Story Of Motörhead.“But their bass
player never showed up! And like a stupid
c**t, he left his bass right there in the van, [implying],
‘Please steal my gig.’ So, I stole his gig!”
Job stolen, but bass eventually returned (“Fair is
fair,” Lemmy shrugged), Hawkwind’s new bassist took
to the instrument quickly. Playing guitar chords, rather
than bass notes, he got a thick, heavy sound, far more
powerful than most bassists at the time were getting. It
helped give Hawkwind’s legendary all-night marathon
gigs an extra element of sonic mind-shag. Songs like
Master Of The Universe and mega-hit Silver Machine
(on which Lemmy sang, much to the chagrin of band
leader Dave Brock, when he appeared on the cover
of the NME by himself after the single hit Number
Three), displayed his talents perfectly. But while he was
ETIVJIGX½XQYWMGEPP]JSV,E[O[MRH0IQQ]FIKERXS
prefer speed to the psychedelics and weed that the
rest of the band had an appetite for, reasoning that
it was easier to play a blinder after an 18-hour drive
whizzing your tits off than stoned out of your mind.
Eventually, Lemmy was booted from Hawkwind
after getting busted carrying drugs over the Canadian
border. He formed Motörhead as a way of getting
back at his former bandmates – “And to see what

Faster, harder, and many times louder than
anything that had come before, Motörhead were just

version of Eddie Cochran and Little Richard.“We look
metal, sound punk, and we play rock’n’roll,” sums up
this mongrel he’d created.
But what a mongrel.Albums like Overkill,Ace Of
Spades, Bomber, Iron Fist… Put any of those on and
turn the volume up ’til you rip the knob off.That’s not
just music – it’s the sound of life. It’s the excitement
of staying out late, and fun. Drunk or sober, alone or
with mates, inside or out, late at night or early in the
morning, Motörhead made music to punch you in the
brain, the heart and the goolies and remind you how
brilliant life can be.
And through 40 years, loads of members, triumphs,
tragedies, gigs good and bad, Lemmy was there for all
of it, his bass louder than anyone’s, his mic stand higher
than all others. Frequently, when asked why he’d kept
going for such a long time, Lemmy’s response was that
he liked it.“It’s not because of hit records,” he told
Channel 4 in the Live Fast Die Old documentary,“We
haven’t had one of those for years.” Perhaps not, but
Motörhead’s name, sound and attitude was one that
kept their tank moving forward constantly.

When the ’Head played Glastonbury in 2014, who
was watching from the wings but headliner Florence
Welch? And again, this is because Lemmy was just
Lemmy. Motörhead’s music was an extension of
his outlook: unapologetic, single-minded, but with a
loveable charm for something so rough and un-pretty.
The man was a living totem pole of what rock’n’roll
stands for, in life and sound.When Motörhead
appeared on cult comedy show The Young Ones in
1984, playing Ace Of Spades in the living room of the
characters’ house, it was a perfect match. It wasn’t just
music.The show’s anarchic, unconventional methods
were as rock’n’roll as Lemmy’s Rickenbacker bass. But
then, when the man did a Kit Kat advert, it wasn’t a
sell-out – it was the coolest thing a chocolate biscuit

because Lemmy never took himself too seriously. No
God, no Devil, you’re gonna die someday.“If you don’t
keep your sense of humour, you may as well blow your
fucking brains out,” he once said.
During a 2014 interview with this writer, having
had to cancel a load of dates and abandon a set at
Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival due to failing
health, I asked if he was looking forward to returning
to England and getting back onstage at Wembley again.
“I don’t like Wembley,” he replied with a laugh.

boasted that the weather in his LA home was better
than the rain we were currently having in England,
and scolded us for only knowing the price of petrol in
litres, rather than gallons. Useless as a tour preview, but
one of the most Lemmy interviews we’ve ever printed.
In keeping with his ‘Never Say Die’ outlook, Lemmy
often said he’d probably die on the road.“What else
am I going to do?” he retorted, when asked if he’d ever
stop touring.Tragically, we’ll never have the chance to
see him one last time, or say goodbye properly. It is a
genuinely sad, tragic time, but remember: when did you
ever hear Lemmy sounding down? Exactly.And even
on Till The End, a confessional ballad of sorts from
last year’s immense Bad Magic album, where Lemmy
looks back on his life the way Frank Sinatra did on My
Way, it’s now a proud full-stop at the end of a life well
lived. Full of ups and downs, but whose isn’t? If you’re

spoke to this genuine one-off, we left his hotel room
with a fuzzy head (when Lemmy offered us a drink, we
asked for water, he told us to “stop pissing about” and
produced a load of beer), a smile on our face, and the
happiness that comes from meeting a genuine hero.
“Say,‘Fuck you!’” growled Lemmy as he posed for a
pic.“See you next time,” we both said.
Because Lemmy seemed immortal, and always did,
there was always a next time.Always another album,
another tour, another pearl of wisdom. But now, there
won’t be.And so, the only thing for it is to do as his
bandmates instructed in their announcement that their
friend was gone.
“We will say more in the coming days, but for now,
please… play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud,
play Lemmy’s music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share
stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man
celebrated so vibrantly himself.”

HIS DAYS AS A PUNK ROCK FRONTMAN MIGHT BE OVER, BUT HENRY ROLLINS
ISN’T PULLING ANY PUNCHES. TIME TO TAKE COVER…
H
enry Rollins has plenty to say for himself.
So much so that, for the past 25 years, the
one-time frontman to iconic LA hardcore
leaders Black Flag (1981 – 1986) and the
Rollins Band’s proto-grunge (1987 – 2006)
has toured the world as a spoken word artist. Curiosity
is his powerful muse, sprinkled with just a little rage.“I get
angry every day,” he admits. And, this past year, there’s been
plenty for him to be mad about. But his performances of
rational thought on global issues – rather than knee-jerk
rhetoric – have long been a compelling MO.
Take the roots of a forthcoming spoken word world
tour, which comprises a raft of UK shows throughout the
early part of 2016. In search of inspiration, Henry placed
“his boots on the ground” in countries not mentioned
on a Buzzfeed ‘17 Places To Find Your Zen’ list – among
them Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Iran. He walked
the streets, river paths and railroads, and chatted to locals,
visiting slums and knocking on doors. Meanwhile, his
introduction to every stranger that greeted him along
the way was always, ‘Hey, I’m Henry! How are you living?’
“I was in Pakistan,” he says, “in the neighbourhood
where [former Pakistan Prime Minister, Benazir] Bhutto
was assassinated. I had conversations in the streets
while cars burned. Other than a journalist, who got his
soundbite and ran, I was the only white guy out

on the street. I’m going to places I’ve never been
before, with my camera, backpack and protein
bars. I walk into it to see what happens, and try

It must have been a risky research trip…
“It probably wasn’t the safest environment,
but I’m [living] in LA – I could get shot on the
highway if I cut some guy off.The world has
people in it, so it’s dangerous. But I’ve found that
if you’re curious; if you look at a man, look in his
eyes and say,‘Hello, sir’; if you realise where you
are, and act polite and respectful, people will
jump into your lap…To me, the big lesson in

enry has long carried an inquisitive vibe to his
grumpy, hard rock portfolio. When backed by
the guitars of Black Flag, he would challenge
GSRZIRXMSR&EGOXLIRMRXLIPEXI´WLI½VWXXVMIHSYX
spoken word. His debut took place at an open mic night
in Hollywood, where he spoke alongside the likes of
Mike Watt from Californian punks Minutemen at the
suggestion of a local promoter. “I went to see where the
pretty people lived,” says Henry. “He said, ‘Hey, you gotta
big mouth! Why don’t you do this?’”
Since then, shows have increased in both frequency
and popularity. Henry tours almost nonstop this year,
taking in countries such as the Ukraine. “I’m 55 – things
should be tapering off,” he says. “Or, as Spinal Tap would
say, ‘They should be to a more exclusive audience.’ But
it’s more people now, more locations.”
His rock’n’roll days are done, he admits, but he
doesn’t miss the life at all, “because I did it completely”,
he says. “I have no questions about making a record or
doing a gig with a band.There’s not one damn piece of
furniture in that room I didn’t wear out.”
He’s still synced to music’s power, though. Recently,
Henry was in the same London venue as
Eagles Of Death Metal.The last person he
remembers chatting to that night was their
frontman, Jesse Hughes. Chillingly, it was the
evening before ISIS launched their attack
on Le Bataclan in Paris, where the same LA
band were playing a headline show. Eighty-
nine people were murdered in the assault.
“There’s no touring act who didn’t feel
the Paris attacks on a gut level,” says
Henry. “It could have been them out
there – everyone in the rock world,
from Mick Jagger to Gibby Haynes
of Butthole Surfers.And my remedy
for any bad situation is music. Having a good day? Put

answer to this is more gigs.Any kid who wants to join
ISIS? Give them a Hawkwind record, talk them out of it.

record, too.’There’s different ways of working out your
anger… I don’t know if there’s a
political or military solution to this, but
for me, it’s rock’n’roll to the rescue.”
Even though his performing days
are over – as a frontman, at least –
Henry intends to practice what he’s
preaching. ISIS, he says, won’t scare
him into retirement because he’s lived
through terrorism already. In 2001,
amid 9/11’s fallout, many acts were
“cancelling tours, left and right”. Not
the Rollins Band.They were back

didn’t lose a single show.”
In the wake of Paris, his standpoint
remains equally resolute.“I will not
diverge from my plan at all,” he says.
“Am I cancelling any shows because of
something that happened in the world?
No. Why? Because I’m not living in fear. I
cannot stop doing my thing, because then
I’ve got a hard day to get through.”
That LA promoter was bang on: Henry’s got a lot
of mouth – but it’s being used for good. His spoken
word brings some heavy experience, too. Listen up.

elcome to the calming eye of a
storm. For Andy Biersack, 2015
was a super-crazy year. Not only
had BlackVeil Brides emerged from
a tour in support of their fourth
studio album – 2014’s incendiary self-titled release –
FYXXLI]EPWSWXEVXIH[SVOSRXLIMV½JXLWLSYPHIVIHF]
legendary studio producer John Feldmann (The Used,
All Time Low). For most artists, that would be more
than enough to warrant a lengthy holiday.
Not Andy. Relaxing in his LA home, chatting to
Kerrang! during a brief Christmas break from the
studio, he reckons there’s more business to get
XLVSYKLQSVI[SVOXSFIHSRI2EQIP]XLI½VWX
album from his soon-to-be-released solo project,
Andy Black. First announced 18 months ago, it’s an
album that’s been a long time in the making and

They Don’t Need To Understand was released in
May 2014.Yet the only intel on a full-length release
since then has been a series of social media pics

– Gerard and Mikey Way, Joel and Benji Madden;
All Time Low’s Rian Dawson, and Ashton Irwin,
drummer with 5 Seconds Of Summer. Now,
though, Andy’s ready to spill…
“It’s been an interesting process,” he says. “There’s
a cohesive sound to it.The initial concern that solo

they’re trying to do and avoid making it a diet version
of their band… While BlackVeil Brides were resting
up and writing, I thought,‘Fuck it! I don’t need a
vacation, let’s do this.’ We jumped in and in the time I
would have had off, I made a record!”
And so, what of that record? Well…
HOW DOES IT FEEL MAKING A SOLO ALBUM?
“It’s completely different, very unlike my entire career,
which has been spent in a collaborative effort with
four other individuals.There’s also a precedent when
you’re making a Black Veil Brides record. At this point
RS[XLMWMWSYV½JXLVIGSVHXLEX[I´VIQEOMRK¯ERH
that’s not to say that we go in with a cookie-cutter
approach, but we certainly know stylistically what we
like.The odd thing about the solo record was there
was no precedent.”
HOW’S IT SOUNDING?
“I think my intention for this was to go as far in the
other direction as possible. Sonically, the goal was to
really play with music and a lot of different stuff, to
have a lot of odd instrumentation and to have a lot
of programmed stuff, keyboards and more classic,
almost pop-rock guitar. It’s more U2 than Megadeth.
There are no guitar solos on the record. There’s a
lot of drumming styles; there’s some weird sleigh
bells. It was about playing with music and seeing
what happened. We came up with something in the

HAD…
vein of stuff I love – U2,Adam Ant… It’s somewhere
between Springsteen, new romantic and modern
goth-pop music.”
WHAT WAS IT LIKE GETTING HIGH-PROFILE HELP
ON THESE SONGS?
“We were fortunate enough to decide, ‘Well, let’s
have guests come in.’ Basically, the band on this
record was an all-star cast of people that we loved,
from Patrick Stump [Fall Out Boy] to Gerard Way, to
Ashton from 5SOS. Quinn Allman [formerly of The
Used] played almost all the guitars on the record.
Working and writing a song with Gerard and then
having Mikey [Way] come in and play bass on that
song… Stuff like that was a lot of fun.”
LYRICALLY, ARE YOU EXPLORING DIFFERENT
AREAS, TOO?
“It’s still cryptic, but I’m being more open about
emotional situations and things that happened to me
in the last couple of years. At the end of 2015, I felt
like a stronger person. I changed my dietary habits.
I cut out bad activities, like drinking. I really tried to
become a better person, because we were so burnt
out on the road and I wanted to talk about that stuff.
Nothing terrible happened to me, but I had health
issues, and I had a little bit of sadness from being away
from home for so long. I just didn’t feel like myself for
a lot of the time, so I really took hold of myself.”

COMFORT, FAMILIARITY, SAFETY. IN THE OTHER: AMBITION, GLORY… AND POSSIBLE
FAILURE. DEREK SANDERS REVEALS WHY IT WAS FINALLY TIME TO GAMBLE IT ALL…
L
ots of musicians, when they’re starting out, want
to be part of the biggest band in the world.
No-one wants to be the beigest band in the
world, yet that’s sort of what happened to
Mayday Parade. In their 10-year history, they’ve
built up a loyal enough fanbase.They play moderately
sized venues on a regular basis and hover around the
mid-afternoon, lower stage slots at just the kind of
festivals you’d expect to see them on.They’ve never
made a bad album, exactly, but nor had they released a
truly great one. At least, until last year.
Where previous albums had seen them repeat a
formula of polished pop-rock anthems designed to
pluck at heartstrings, 2015’s Black Lines went for a
rawer, grittier sound with a more dynamic approach to
songwriting and a few genuine curveballs.
“[Black Lines] was the culmination of a lot of things,
but, more than anything, on the touring cycle for
[2013’s previous album] Monsters In The Closet, it
began to feel like we were beginning to become too
predictable,” nods frontman Derek Sanders. “Monsters
felt like it was very similar to what we’d done in the
past, so we really wanted Black Lines to feel like
something different.”
Was this change the result of a gradual conversation
among the band members, or was there a single
moment of epiphany?
“It was a gradual process, but if there was a
‘moment’, it was when we recorded a cover of Bush’s
Comedown for the Punk Goes 90s Vol. 2 compilation.
We approached that differently; we tracked it mostly live
and it was a much rawer way of recording than we’d
done before. It felt really good and it captured some of
the energy of playing a song live that can sometimes fall
¾EXSREVIGSVH%PMKLXGEQISRERH[I[IRX³;LEX
if, on the next record, we try to keep things more raw
and rough around the edges?’”
In an artistic sense it’s an approach that’s paid
off, but in purely commercial terms it would prove
something of a gamble. Derek himself might have
pegged Monsters In The Closet as a little too close to
its predecessors, but it was also successful, giving the

“It is a risk because the safe option would have
been to keep going down the same road and doing

in those terms, but we needed to do this for ourselves.
We were 19 when we started this band, and now we’re
nearly 30.Your tastes and what you’re into changes a lot
through that time.”

was accompanied by a documentary,Three
Cheers For Ten Years, and the whole anniversary thing
also played a part in getting them to re-evaluate their
past, present and future.
“From the day we started the band, we’ve always

looked six months to a year into the future, and that’s
what we try to plan out and set goals to achieve. It’s
always been this fast-moving thing where we’re in the
moment and not necessarily looking very far into the

stepped back and gone, ‘If we’re going to be a band for
another 10 years, what should we be doing now?’ It’s the

Ask if they ever did want to be the biggest band in

into any festival at any time
the world, though, and the singer claims they had far
humbler ambitions.
“When we started, our ambitions were simply to be
in a sustainable touring band,” he recalls. “Growing up, we
would all go to shows and you wouldn’t really get any
huge artists that came through Tallahassee, Florida.You’d
get bands like Armor For Sleep or Copeland that were
kinda big in the scene, and we wanted to be in a band
that was comparable to that.”
To that end, they started following tours like Warped
and Taste Of Chaos around – not as a participating band,
but simply to sell copies of their self-released debut EP
to people in the queues. Debut full-length A Lesson In
Romantics established them in the scene, but on second
album Anywhere But Here they fell foul of record
company interference.
“We did a lot of cowriting, trying to make the label
happy with that record, and it made it a bad experience
for us,” Derek explains “But I don’t know if I’d change
that, because that’s how you learn and how you grow.
The point is, we were able to make it through that
without it killing us, so I think we’re better off for it.”
With the following two albums seeing the band
settling into a comfortable pattern, did you ever have the
sense that you weren’t living up to your potential? That
you were doing something good, but not great?
“Sure. I could stay awake all night worrying about all
that, but at the end of the day we realise how lucky we
are to be where we are. We could have been a band
who toured for a few years and it never worked out,
and that could have been it. We could have been back
to real life and real jobs, so I think we’re all just incredibly
happy to still be here doing this,” Derek says.
“We’ve never had one giant leap upwards; we never
really blew up. Everything has been a gradual movement
forwards for the band, but that’s all we can ask for, if you
asked us where we want to be in 10 years I’d say ‘still on
that curve’. If we haven’t dropped off in 10 years, I’d be
incredibly happy with that.”

LIKE A beat-laden, neon-streaked
Iron Maiden, Enter Shikari simply
don’t do bad shows. Maybe that’s
down to the shape-shifting, mosh-pit-
at-a-foam-party eclecticism of their sound. Maybe
it’s the all-for-one investment of the quartet
onstage; smart-casual dress code inevitably
dissolving into sweat-soaked exertion. Or
maybe it’s the perma-jacked fanbase: bouncing,
banging and screaming themselves squeaky
with an energy that aptly combines punk edge
and nightclub euphoria. On nights like tonight,

source of the St Albans boys’ greatness feels like

by lightning or smashed by a tidal wave as your

Fearless Vampire Killers, conversely, aren’t
troubled by greatness. And tonight, only
sporadically by goodness. They’ve energy, sure;
haughtily vampiric swagger, even. But for a band

Thankfully, Shikari aren’t shy about
wielding their power. Roaring to life with the
sociopolitical shitstorm of The Appeal & The
1MRHW[IIT  XLIHERGI¾SSVMWVIHYGIHXSE
warzone, before the tectonic electro-stomp
of Destabilise twists the churning mass with
supreme rhythmic purpose. Sorry You’re Not
A Winner kickstarts a clap/growl/sing-along so
brilliantly bonkers, even the bar staff can’t help
joining in, and the mashed-up bridge between
The Last Garrison and Juggernauts leaves the
place awash with beer, perspiration and free-
running adrenaline.
All nervous, elastic energy and impassioned
charisma, Rou Reynolds has evolved into a
frontman of outstanding individualism: explosive
yet controlled, informed but never preachy. He’s
helped by Rory Clewlow – the guitarist’s barrier-
jumping sense of anarchy absorbing plenty of the
limelight glare – while rhythm men Chris Batten
and Rob Rolfe exude everything but anonymity.
Rou invades the audience for a rousing rendition
of The Paddington Frisk from the middle of the
crowd, before returning to the stage to lead
them in the ‘YOU FUCKING SPANNER’ refrain
of roof-raising main-set closer Anaesthetist.
A few bars of Chariots Of Fire kick off a
victory-lap encore of Constellations, Slipshod
and Zzzonked, but even as Shikari round off
this absolute riot of a party in a mess of bulging
speakers, broken voices and tangled limbs, they’re
visibly hungry for more.
Towelling-down afterwards, they’re buzzing,
anxious and eager to let us know that there’s
much plenty to come. Just imagining a show this
intense happening on an even bigger scale on
their tour in February is mind-melting. Get ready.

because of ‘structural damage’, but Clutch are showing
no signs of wear and tear. Once the generic heavy

any interest, Neil Fallon and co sidle onto the stage and
waste no time making it their own. Perhaps it’s because

two new tunes – X-Ray Visions and Firebirds, both so
good it doesn’t feel like a gamble – their 75-minute set
wisely swerves many of their longer, bluesy numbers.
When those do appear, we’re never far from a
bulldozing groove (The Soapmakers) or a rabble-rousing
anthem (The Mob Goes Wild) to raise the tempo again
and prompt some seriously questionable dancing – and
air-drumming.The only complaints bubbling up from

favourite song, or they could’ve squeezed another one in
before curfew. Still, given how this gig nearly bit the dust,

QIF TONIGHT teaches one thing, it’s that SikTh – a
band you couldn’t hum a tune of if you had three
mouths – are one of those reuniting bands who
play bigger venues second time around. If it teaches
us two things, it’s that the Watford six-piece haven’t
made the graduation smoothly – hence playing to
ERYRHIVGETEGMX]3*SVYQ/IRXMWL8S[R-XEPMERW
Destrage kick things off, sounding like an entire
festival bill playing at once, before Hacktivist arrive.

doing them a disservice; they’re simply more effective
in the same way a direct hit is more effective than
a frenzied scattershot. They’ve got targets in mind,
too – presenting Unlike Us as “a fuck you to David
Cameron and all his fucking cronies”. SikTh should be
similarly potent. Unfortunately, tonight, the nuances
of their music – the intricacies that earned them
their ‘mathcore’ label – are eroded by leaden sound.
It’s therefore the fans’ familiarity with the likes of
Scent Of The Obscene and Skies Of Millenium
Night that carries them through, rather than stellar

“Like all good scenes, Watford got
exciting because of a determined
bunch of friends who wanted to put
on great shows.There was no real
Watford heritage before, bar a
handful of punk bands and Elton
John, perhaps! At the turn of the
millennium, Mikee Goodman from
SikTh started putting on gigs at
various venues around the area, most
notably The Rugby Club.There’d
be an amazing line-up every week that
eventually bought in bigger established
bands like Napalm Death, King
Prawn and earthtone9.The
shows were so busy and wild that
it soon convinced bands to make
Watford a stop on their tours.”
WHAT OTHER VENUES ARE THERE
BEYOND THE RUGBY CLUB?
“From around 2004, a bunch of my
friends put on shows under the guise
‘Last Chance’ at other places such
as the Pump House, Boxing
Ring and Railway Club. More
new, bigger venues bred even more
talent.The local music scene was
healthier than ever, and some of these
shows spawned the likes of Gallows
and Lower Than Atlantis.”
WHAT’S THE BEST GIG
YOU’VE SEEN IN WATFORD?
“Well, I’ve always had a soft
spot for hardcore, so my most
memorable shows were from the
likes of Knuckledust, Stampin’
Ground and other UKHC bands.
Man, those shows got so violent,
but in a completely positive way!
There’s something about the energy
of hardcore shows that can’t be
matched.The thing I like about
Watford gigs is that bands tend to
have a very outward-looking attitude.
I don’t mean they want to become

international superstars, but that they
want to get out and play to everyone,
everywhere. I will always be grateful
for being a part of the Watford
scene because I wouldn’t have made a
life in music had it not been for all the
special people involved in it.”
WHERE CAN BANDS PRACTICE
AND RECORD?
“When we were all kids we’d practice
at Basement Studios1]½VWX
proper band, Cry For Silence,
started out there when I was just 16.
Hell, my bandmate Alessandro
‘V-man’ Venturella even went
on to play bass for Slipknot – I hear
they’re quite big (laughs)! It was great,
everyone rehearsed there. It meant
there was a lot of healthy competition
and a real sense of community,
everybody improving because
of each other.There were punk
bands down there like Captain
Everything! and, on the other end
of the spectrum, you had SikTh
playing extreme tech-metal! The
studios fell into a state of disrepair a
few years back, but have been taken
over by producer Steve Sears
and rebranded as Titan Studios.
Since the overhaul, it’s really started to
make Watford an exciting place for
music again.”

“The people who were involved in
cultivating the scene have since gone
on to become quite impressionable
characters. Andy Snape, for
example, now works for some of the
biggest names in the industry over at

and Laurent Barnard is busy with
Venn Records; I could name-drop
all day! Oh, plus me, of course.”
