ESSENTIAL COURSE

REQUEST INFORMATION
Course Request Overview and Important Dates
February 2-13: Grade 8- 11 Counselors met with all grade levels to review the Curriculum
Handbook, discuss the course request process and four year planning.

February 8th: Grade 10-11 Seniors join advisory to discuss the student perspective of taking AP
courses

March 2: Trimester 2 grades finalized

March 6: HS teachers have to input final course recommendations

March 9-16: Electronic course request in advisory


Course Request Overview and Important Dates

• A draft schedule will be created based on student requests around the


last week of March, just before spring holiday.

• The aim is to create a schedule that meets the needs of as many students
as possible.

• When the schedule is completed, Counselors will notify and meet with
students who are unable to get into their requested courses due to
unresolvable scheduling conflicts.
Graduation Requirements
A minimum 24 credits with at least five (5) Grade 12 level (4C) or Advanced
Placement (5C) course credits are required to graduate from AIS.

Humanities 4
World Languages 2 (two years of the same language)
Physical and Health Education 2
Visual/Performing Arts 2
Computer Science & Technology 2

Notes:
1. One (1) Mathematics Algebra I credit may be earned in Middle School Grade 8

2. Transfer students at Grade 9, or above, receive one credit for each one hundred forty (140) successful hours of
academic work at other institutions toward AIS graduation requirements.

2018-19 Course Updates
New Courses:
● Spanish II (WLS2C)
● AP Computer Science Principles (CSP5C)

Course Updates:
● Pre-AP Psychology- Renamed Intro to Psychology (PSY3C)
● Computer Design is now a 4C course
● Technology and Design (CTD4C)- Renamed Computer Technology and
Design(CTD4C)
● CST1C in 2018-19 will have a design focus, whilst CST2C will focus on
programming. Therefore, students who have taken CST1C are not
eligible to take CST2C
The College Board offer students the chance to earn the AP International
Diploma (APID) if they display exceptional achievement across a variety of
disciplines.
It is a globally recognized achievement that certifies outstanding academic
excellence with a global perspective.
AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that includes a two-course
sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research.
Students who complete both courses with scores of 3 or higher, AND receive scores
of 3 or higher on four AP Exams in subjects of their choosing, will receive the AP
Capstone Diploma. You can read more about the Capstone program, and the
Seminar and Research courses we will offer for 2018-19 in the English department’s
section of this curriculum handbook.
