TOUCH-UP

System Code Document Number Revision

01 T IM 05 03

1. PURPOSE

This instruction describes the application details of Zinc-rich paints as Renovation agents
according to hot dip galvanizing standarts which is called “Touch-up by Zinc-rich paints”.
For further information, Please see “6.3 Renovation” and “Annex C” sections of the hot-dip
galvanizing standart “EN ISO 1461” and the “Standart Practice for repair of damaged and uncoated
areas of hot dip galvanized coatings - ASTM A780”

2. DESCRIPTION

If some ash covered and uncoated areas are determined on a newly galvanized material after
unjigging following the hot-dip galvanization or
If some corners/end sections of the zinc coating on a hot-dip galvanized steel article is found to be
broken and uncoated because of hits during handling, these areas can be renovated following the
below instructions:

1.) Determine the size(s) of the uncoated area(s) on a galvanized material. The area(s) to be
renovated should not be larger than 10cm2 each.

2.) The sum of all area(s) to be renovated on an individual material, should not be more than a total
area of 0.5% of the whole surface area of that material.

3.) Obtain a suitable size of a “Wire brush” that will allow you to reach every point on every single
uncoated area that will be renovated.

4.) Hold the material tight.

5.) Wire brush the “ash covered and uncoated area” thoroughly or
Wire brush the “surface rust away, from the top of the section whose galvanization was damaged”

6.) Make sure that the wire brushed section is white and free of any iron oxides/rust in the end. If
not, continue until you see that it is totally white.

7.) The application of Zinc-rich paint can be achieved in the ambient temperatures from
-15°C up to 40°C. Prior to application, the surface should be cleaned from water and ice.

8.) If the Zinc-rich paint can temperature is below 15°C, heat the Zinc-rich paint can to a
temperature in between 15-25°C by inserting the can into a cup of boiled water.

9.) Open the top of the Zinc-rich paint. By the help of a spatula or screwdriver.

10.) Stir the Zinc-rich paint by a stick thoroughly.

11.) Get a “number 9” wet paint brush and immerse it into the Zinc-rich paint.

12.) Do the application over the “white metal” surface with the paint brush.

13.) Each coat of Zinc-rich paint results in DFT of min50.8 - 60.0 microns of coating.
So, the 2nd layer application is necessary after the first coat is dried up in 10minutes.

The minimum of 100microns of DFT is required by the EN ISO 1461. The minimum of 100microns
of DFT of Zinc-rich paint shows that the renovation has been succesful.
