AC/DC Current Clamp C-Probe 1

14
Functional Description

4 Functional Description
The current clamp C-Probe 1 was designed as current/potential transformer
especially for the exact measurement of broadband currents.
Figure 4-1:
Current clamp C-Probe 1

C-Probe 1 is equipped with a Hall probe that can be used to measure both
alternating and direct current potential free without the need to interfere with
the circuit to be measured.
The current measurement range reaches from 50 mA up to 80 A (AC and
DC).
The current clamp contains two measurement ranges: 10 mV/A and
100 mV/A as well as two control lamps for
• power supply (ON) and
• measurement range exceeding (OL = Overload).
A thumbwheel is provided to precisely adjust the zero point. That way the
current clamp can be correctly adjusted to its specific measuring
environment (refer to section 5.1 “Zero Adjustment” on page 19).
The current clamp can be connected to any measuring device with an input
impedance of at least 100 k Ohm.

2. Battery condition indicator.
3. Zero adjustment of the current clamp.
4. Battery compartment.
5. Connecting cable, 2 meter with banana plugs.
6. Control indicator for measurement range overflow (OL).
7. Arrow symbol, reference flow direction of the DC current to be measured.

16
Functional Description

1 Slide switch with 3 positions

• OFF: Current clamp is switched off.
• 10 mV/A: Peak value measurement of AC or DC currents with a
transformer ratio of 10 mV per A over the complete
measurement range.
• 100 mV/A: Peak value measurement of AC or DC currents with a
transformer ratio of 100 mV per A, i.e. increased
sensitivity and reduced measurement range.

2 Battery condition lamp "ON"

The green LED is lit when the current clamp is switched on. Should the LED
not light up, either the battery is empty or an internal error of the current
clamp occured.

3 Zero adjustment of the current clamp

By means of this thumbwheel, the output voltage of the current clamp can
be adjusted to zero. This is necessary to compensate for internal thermal
effects, remanent magnetic fields, or the geomagnetic field prior to a
measurement.

4 Battery compartment
Before you replace the battery, please ensure that
• the clamp jaws are closed
• the current clamp is switched off (slide switch position "OFF")
• the current clamp does not grasp any wire
• the current clamp is not connected to any measuring device.
Refer also to section 5.4 “Battery Replacement” on page 21.

5 Connection cable
2 meters in length, with banana plugs at cable end to connect to the
measuring device.
AC/DC Current Clamp C-Probe 1

6 Control lamp for measurement range overflow "OL"

This red LED lights up if
• the measured current exceeds the adjusted measurement range
• short current peaks exceed the measurement range
• the measurement is not valid due to other reasons.

7 Direction arrow
The arrow symbol shows the reference flow direction of the DC current to be
measured. If the current clamp is operated in a way that the DC current
flows in inverse direction to the displayed reference direction, the current
clamp outputs a negative voltage.

18
Operation

5 Operation

5.1 Zero Adjustment

Zero adjustment is only required when measuring pure DC values or
alternate currents with a superimposed DC share
The zero adjustment compensates thermal effects, remanent magnetic
fields, or the geomagnetic field.
Figure 5-1:
Zero adjustment

1. Connect C-Probe 1 to a DC voltmeter, e.g. to the Analog DC Input of the

CMC 256 test set.
2. Select a measurement range with a resolution of at least 10 mV.
3. Set the slide switch of the current clamp to 100 mV/A.
4. Now turn the thumbwheel (4) until a value of approximately 0 is
displayed.

19
AC/DC Current Clamp C-Probe 1

Note: Zero adjustment is also recommended in the following cases:

) • prior to measuring very low currents (< 5 A)
• when successively measuring currents with different values
• at changed polarity.
Of course you can perform the DC adjustment directly at the
analog input the current clamp is connected to. For the
adjustment switch the input to the 100 mV measurement
range.

5.2 Current Measurement

Figure 5-2:
Current measurement

1. Set the slide switch of C-Probe 1 to the desired measurement range of

100 mV/A or 10 mV/A. The control indicator "ON" lights up.
2. Perform a zero adjustment, if required (for example with the Analog DC
Input of the CMC 256 test set).
3. Connect C-Probe 1 to one of the analog outputs of the CMC 256 test set
(red = +, black = -).
4. Grasp the wire to be measured with the current clamp. The arrows on top
and underneath the clamp designate the current flow direction!
Make sure that the clamp jaws are clean and completely closed.

20
Operation

Note: If remanence effects occur after measuring high DC currents,

) these effects can be eliminated either by opening and closing
the clamp jaws several times (without a grasped wire!) or by
exposing the clamp to a decreasing magnetic field.

5.3 Battery Check

If the current clamp is switched on and the battery condition indicator "ON"
is off, the battery voltage is too low.
In this case please replace the battery as described in the following section.

5.4 Battery Replacement

Before replacing the battery, please ensure the following:
• The current clamp may not grasp any wire and must be disconnected
from any measurement device.
• The current clamp must be switched off, i.e. the slide switch must be in
the position "OFF".
To replace the battery proceed as follows:
1. Unscrew the screw in the compartment cover.
2. Open the battery compartment by removing the cover.
3. Replace the battery with a suitable 9V Alkaline type and then close the
housing.
4. Please dispose of the flat battery according to the respective recycling
regulations.

Maintenance and Service

6 Maintenance and Service

6.1 Storage
If you either store or do not use C-Probe 1 for a longer period of time, please
remove the battery and store it separately. The battery acid may run out,
which would result in a damage of the current clamp.

6.2 Cleaning
Prior to cleaning C-Probe 1, disconnect it from all peripheral devices.
Never dip the clamp into water!
• Make sure that the air gap respectively the clamp jaws are clean.
• To prevent the clamp from possible corrsosion, occasionally clean the
clamp surfaces with a slightly oiled smooth cloth.
• Clean the housing with a moist cloth and a bit of soap water. Afterwards
dry the housing with a dry cloth or a hair-drier (max. 80° C).

6.3 Service and Calibration

Should there be a reason for complaint, please contact our service
department or local subsidiary, and give them a detailed report of the reason
for the complaint.
The addresses are listed in section “Manufacturer Contact Information” on
page 29.
Only trained personnel are allowed to perform service and recalibration
work. In case of repair or maintenance work, please note that the
constructional characteristics of the device may not be changed due to
safety reasons.
Only use original spare parts. The manufacturer cannpt be held liable for
damages caused by improper repair or wrong spare components.
To keep the measurement accuracy the current clamp must be calibrated
regularly.
If the current clap is only used occasionally, we recommend an annual
check. In case of daily usage, a check every six months is recommended.
If a calibration is required, please contact our service department or your
local subsidiary.
