(The Lord needs it!

It’s been 49 years since our church was established
I think 49 is such a meaningful number
49 is 7 squared and that means we have two number 7s, which are known as the lucky number
Isn’t today a blessed day yet?
I believe that today is Sabbath with countless blessings
May God’s blessing be upon each and every one of you today

The second digit of number 49 is number 9 and it is the last number before it gets into double digits.
It indicates that we are standing here where we are about to take another step forward
It is a such a meaningful day to
What should be our respond when God calls us at this crucial moment?

it’s a crime when you break into someone’s house with intent
Theft (crime of stealing)
it is also a crime when you take another person’s property
But when we look at today’s scripture reading, it seems like Jesus is telling us to commit a crime

1
In verse 30, it says “you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone
asks you, why are you loosing it, you shall say to him, “because the Lord needs it”
Jesus’ command here does not make any sense
It completely violates the law
It almost seems like He is inconsiderate to tell the disciples to steal someone’s colt
He could’ve given them money to buy or lend the colt
But He told His disciples to break into this person’s house and take his colt
Do you think the disciples should obey this command of Jesus?
He’s basically saying, if the owner comes up and asks, “what are you doing with my colt?”
They can just say, “oh the Lord needs it so we will steal your colt”
Who do you think you are? And I don’t even know your Lord.
I could totally imagine the owner saying this

But that’s not what happened here. Jesus sent His disciples to bring the colt. The owner asked the disciples why they are
taking his colt. But when he heard that the Lord needs it, He let the disciples take his colt.
Don’t you think this is a bit strange?

It’s hard to understand why Jesus tells His disciples such a command like this/ It’s also strange to see how disciples obeyed
Jesus without saying anything/ out of all the people, the owner is the weirdest, letting the disciple steal his baby horse.
Everything is just so weird.
However, everything will be revealed when we go deeper into the scripture.
It’s no coincidence that this event happened
In fact, this was a fulfillment of prophecy written in the bible 500 years before Jesus was born
It was such a significant event to fulfil the prophecy about the coming of Messiah

2

In Zechariah 9:9, it says, “rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is
coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

The important thing here is that the obedience of disciples actually helps this prophecy to be fulfilled
The story teaches us a great lesson here
Sometimes, God asks us to do hard things that may not make sense to us
Things we find awkward, even embarrassing
However, remember this
when God asks you to do something,
He has purposes and plans we cannot see or know
Even though we can’t fully understand his purpose
and it might not seem right
His blessings will be upon you when you fix your eyes on Jesus and follow him

In Isaiah 55:8-9, it says, “for my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord. “For as the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Disciples were able to witness this amazing fulfillment when they followed what Jesus asked them to do without any doubt
in their mind
This experience also reminded them again that Jesus is the Messiah they were waiting for

When we obey and follow what God asks us do, God will surely provide enormous blessings to each and every one of us.

Jesus riding on a donkey to enter Jerusalem is found in all four gospels of the New Testament
It indicates how important this event is
The owner did not know what’s going on, but obeyed anyway
He did not hesitate to take action
He did not ask for anything
We don’t know if he believed in Jesus, but he let the disciples to take his donkey as soon as he heard that the Lord needs it

A colt or donkey was a symbol of industry and wealth in biblical times

What was the owner thinking when he gave his donkey to disciples?
I believe that he had known of Jesus since Jesus used to come visit Bethany to see Lazarus
Maybe he read the old testament and was waiting for the Messiah to come

Maybe he even knew about the prophecy of the Messiah riding on a colt and wished it could be his colt

Give your heart's best and holiest affections to Him who gave His life that you might be among the redeemed family in the heavenly courts
