Book Review of “Robinson Crusoe”

Robinson Crusoe' by Daniel Defoe is one of the greatest novels,

published in 1719. This book is a biography of the title character who
spends 28 years alone in an uninhabited island. Genre of the book is
realistic fiction where author focuses on life and strange surprising
adventures of Robinson Crusoe. It can also be considered as an
adventure story.
Robinson Crusoe born at 1632 in York city. He was the third child of a
middle-class English family. Robinson wished to have an adventure
cross the ocean but his parents wanted him to be a lawyer. On 1st
September, 1651, he took his first voyage with his friend. He was 18 at
that time. The ship was caught in a great storm and Robinson wanted to
go for another journey. But this time the ship was caught by robber and
Robinson had to be a slave. After two years, Crusoe escaped with a
fishing boat and joined with a Portuguese ship. On 30th September,
1659 , a hurricane destroyed the Portuguese ship. His companions were
died and he found himself on the deserted island.
Even though Robinson was not a dutiful person but he was enough
courageous. He left his home without taking his parents’ permission and
never gives up after his failure. If Robinson’s nature was different, then
the story could change. If he was very dutiful, he would not start the
adventure.
Although Crusoe was shocked to find himself on the deserted island but
he wanted to survive. Crusoe spent several days cannibalizing the
shipwreck for materials and provisions. With these salvaged goods, he
began to establish a fort. He kept a record of time, but could not
maintain his journal because his ink was limited. His days were filled
with exploring the island, improving his castle, domesticating goats,
experimenting with pottery, and developing other skills necessary for
self-sufficiency.
Sometimes I want to live alone like Robinson. There are some advantage
and disadvantage. Advantage is that I can live happily and can do
whatever I want. Disadvantage is that I cannot take anyone’s help even
if I am in trouble.

Twenty five years later, he saved a man from cannibals and civilized
him. Crusoe called him Friday, and taught him important things like
English and Christianity. After three years, Crusoe and Friday returned
London in June, 1687 with the help of an English captain. Crusoe found
that his parents were dead. Crusoe discovered that he was rich because
of some previous investments. He got married and became father of
three children. After the death of his wife, he had to travel for more 10
years.

I don't find the end of the book because he was escaped and came back
home, but there was no emotional payoff. At the last moment, he told
about another adventure. I understand that this is just an "adventure
novel" but many people still consider it a classic.

I like this book, so I recommend this book to my friends especially to

my best friend. This book makes me courageous because of Robinson's
adventure and contains a lot of philosophy. Most of the people are
familiar with the basic premise of this book, but there is so much more
to it than simply a man's struggle to survive on an island after a
shipwreck. Defoe gives us a touching and resonating view on the
repentance process and the ability of a man to reshape his attitude and
outlook on life.
