A century of change

Life has changed a lot in the last one hundred
years, especially in the USA. In fact, it’s
almost like a different country! In 1900, there
were only 80 million people living in the
United States and now there are more than
280 million. Today, most people live in cities
and these cities are growing fast. One
hundred years ago, Las Vegas was a small
village with only 30 people, but today there
are 500,000 people living there.
Today, the average American lives for 77
years. At the beginning of the twentieth
century, people lived for an average of 47
years only and most people died of the flu. But
nowadays, the flu is not a serious problem
because there are so many medicines around.
Technology has become an important part of
our lives. But at the beginning of the twentieth
century, very few houses had electricity. In the
USA, only 8% of the home had telephones
 There are more skycrapers in the
United States than in any other country in the
world. A century ago, there weren’t any
skycrapers at all. In 1908, the tallest building
in the USA, and the world, was the Singer
Building in New York. It was 187 m tall. Today,
the tallest building in the USA is the Sears
Tower in Chicago at442 m high.
and, of course, there were no TVs. Today,
there are 200 million telephones; 69 million
people have mobile phones and 165 million
people use the Internet. As for TVs, there are
220 million TV sets in the USA, which means
that there is almost one TV for each American!

Hi my friend, hello friend, has been a long time since the last time you speak, there are many
