Question 3 to 4 (Discussion Text)

Why would an English-speaker never dally-dilly, or walk in a zag-zig? Confused? The

answer lies in the unofficial law of language. English has no government - nobody or
academy rating has been passed not by rules or development. But sometimes, we come
against a curious law that has been passed in by any formal authority, but by the speakers
themselves the technical name.

Very few of us would know that we follow an ancient protocol that goes by the technique of
'ablate reduplication'. It dictates that, in any duplicating word combination, we always sound
(as in 'pit'), or the 'e' (as in 'see'), first, before an 'a' or an 'o - hence fiddle-addle ding dong',
and riff-raff. No native speaker of English would never dally-dilly or shilly-shally on his way
to a song-singing while wearing flip-flops.

The same law is found in many languages. The Japanese have the beautiful "kasa koso' (tho
rustling sound of dry leaves) while the Germans might speak of Quitsch Quatsch
('fiddlesticks'). Warrior(muddle), or of Kissograms (their version of the French bric-a-brac-
and there's another We've all been doing this since centuries, yet the reason about
reduplication exists has never been fully nailed down. Sound is definitively key- when we
produce an i' or 'e', we position our tongue higher in our mouth, whereas the 'a or o pushes it
lower. This high vowel low vowel sequence produces a pleasing rhythm, even if it's one we
reserve mostly for these playful combinations otherwise we might all be eating porridge for
breakfast. Luckily for native speakers we ever need to know what we don't know; we just...
know it!

3. It can be interred from the passage that ablaut reduplication means

A. any unwritten grammar rules
B. a linguistic term for repeating words
C. one of the methods to construct new words
D. repeated words that change form by shifting a vowel
E. the sequence of vowel production in the mouth Owng is most similar to the action of
Fnalish speakers who use the ablaut

4. Reduplication without knowing the reason it exists?

A. Spanish people roll the Rs in Spanish easily.
B. English people drive on the left side of the road.
C. Young New Zealanders learn Maori language in kindergarten.
D. A recent-promoted worker celebrates his/her achievement.
E. indonesian parents try to teach their children to use the right hand instead of the let one.

Question 5 to 6 (Analytical Exposition)

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculturE. Pesticides which are commonly used
may cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most
effective way to control pests.

Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the
soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and
stronger ones have to be developed.

Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects
the ecology and environment as well.

So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be
chosen and applied carefully so that they don’t affect the ecological balance and
environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.

5. What can you say about paragraph two and four?

Once upon a time Sammy and his sister Marie visited their grandparents at their farm.
Sammy picked up a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods but he
could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for the lunch. As he
was walking back he saw Grandma’s pet duck.

Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly which hit the duck square in the head and killed it.
He was shocked and grieved. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the pile of woods. Marie had
seen it all from the window but she said nothing. After the lunch, the next day Grandma said,
“Marie, let’s wash the dishes.” Marie said, “But Grandma, Sammy told me he wanted to help
in the kitchen.”

Then she whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” Sammy got nervous knowing his
sister knew about the duck and if he doesn’t obey, she may tell his grandparents about it. So
without saying anything he did the dishes.

Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing but Grandma said, “I’m
sorry but I need Marie to help make a supper.” Marie just smiled and said, “Well that’s all
right because Sammy told me he wanted to help.”

She whispered again to Johnny, “Remember the duck?” So Marie went fishing and Sammy
stayed to help. After several days of Marie taking advantage of Sammy, he finally couldn’t
stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck.

Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, “Sweetheart, I know. I was standing at the

Question number 11 to 12 are based on the following text. (Descriptive Text)

I have a place I love to go. It’s a fort, or a clubhouse, where I can go with friends. We can
hang out there, plan neat stuff, eat, and rest. Shadow Fort is my favorite place for lots of
reasons.

First of all, there’s plenty of room for a few kids. It’s large (gargantuan to me). The fort is 3
ft. 8 in. high, 5 ft. 3 in. long, and 3 ft. 6 in. wide. There’s a place in back (we call it the
pantry) for crackers, grapefruit, avocados, potatoes, carrots, berries, and Spanish moss. The
roof is made of 4-ft. palm leaves and smaller fronds.

Second, this fort is the first structure I ever built, with the help of my friend Kevin. We built
it during a light shower. It was only a few vines that tangled together to make a kind of cave
that we could crawl under. We worked fast to put palm fronds and leaves over the vines.
“Quick! Let’s get inside!” I shouted to Kevin. We got inside in the nick of time. It began to
rain powerfully, and oh how the wind blew! But our fort kept us safe and dry. Later we
named it Shadow Fort because it sits in a shady area.

Finally, Shadow Fort is my favorite place because it has everything we need. We keep food in
the pantry, a small cot to sit on, and we even have a plywood door. One time Kevin fell out of
a tree and hurt his ankle. I helped him back to Shadow Fort where he rested on the cot. Then
I made some “dinner”—crackers, carrots, and berries for dessert.
Can you see why Shadow Fort is my favorite place? I hope so. When I’m there, I feel happy
as a cat with cream!

Question number 19 to 20 are based on the following text. (Descriptive Text)

Blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries and related plants have been found to contain
resveratrol, a potential anti-cancer agent, according to Agricultural Research Service (ARS)
scientists who made the discovery. This new finding from ARS adds to previous research by
other scientists who found that dark skinned bunch grapes contain resveratrol.

Using chemical identifi cation procedures, the team of scientists measured the resveratrol
content of 30 whole fruit samples of blueberry, cranberry, huckleberry and related plants. The
samples represented five families and 10 species of Vaccinium fruit. They also measured
resveratrol in skin, juice/pulp and seed samples of muscadine grape. Because of its important
biological properties, resveratrol has been examined extensively in grapes. Studies showed
the compound protects the grapes from fungal diseases. It also provides health benefi ts for
consumers by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The compound’s anticancer
potential warranted examination in other fruits.

The team’s studies showed that several fruit samples of Vaccinium contain varying amounts
of the compound. Analysis of the extracts of the skin, juice/pulp and seed of muscadine
grapes showed that concentration of resveratrol more than Vaccinium and muscadine sample
is continuing. The new data could help build a foundation for increasing resveratrol in those
berry and grape crops that are important to many small farmers. Future research goals will
include enhancing production of resveratrol in selected species.
19. From the text, we know that resveratrol .…
A. Is anticancer agent and benefit for reducing heart disease
B. Examines grapes and measures of fruits as sample disease
C. Shows the protection for increasing health in selected fruits
D. Reduces minerals and vitamins in some fruits
E. Protects any fruits from fungal diseases

20. Resveratrol has been tested in grapes because of ….

A. Its advantages by extracting health substances
B. Its disadvantages as anticancer substances
C. Its important biological substances
D. Its risk at cardiovascular diseases
E. Its relationship to the fruit

Question number 21 to 22 are based on the following text. (Descriptive Text)

The plane with largest wingspan ever built was nicknamed the Spruce Goose. The wingspan
of the Spruce Goose was 320 feet (almost 100 meters), and the plane weighed 200 tons. It
was so big that it needed eight engines to power it.

The plane was designed by Howard Hughes in response to a U.S government request for a
plane that was able to carry a large cargo for the war effort. It was made of wood because
wood is a less critical material in wartime than metal.

The plane was so difficult to build that it was never really used. It was flown one time only,
by Hughes himself on November 2, 1947; during that flight, it travelled a distance of less that
one mile over the Los Angeles Harbor, but it did fly. Today, the Spruce Goose is on exhibit
for the public to see in Long Beach, California.
