UNIT-I

1. Classify the types of the energy available on the earth?

Energy can be classified into several types based on the following criteria as:
• Primary and Secondary energy
• Commercial and Non commercial energy
• Renewable and Non-Renewable energy
2. Briefly mention about primary sources of energy?
Primary energy sources are those that are either found or stored in nature. Common
primary energy sources are coal, oil, natural gas and biomass. Other primary energy sources
found on earth include nuclear energy from radioactive substances, thermal energy stored in
earth’s interior and potential energy due to earth’s gravity.
3. What are the principles of energy management?
The principles of energy management involve the following:
i) Procure all the energy needed at the lowest possible price
ii) Manage energy use at highest energy efficiency
iii) Reusing and recycling energy by cascading (waste heat recovery)
iv) Use the most appropriate technology
v) Reduce the avoidable losses
4.Why to save enery?Reasons to save energy?

UNIT-II
1. List down the methods to upgrade boiler efficiency?
2.Birefly explain importance of correct pressure?
3.List out usefulness of energy audit in thermal power station?
Identifies Wastage areas of Fuel, Power and Water & Air Utilization.•Reduction in cost
of generation by implementing findings of EA.•Increases power generation by efficient
utilization of steam in turbine cycle and reduction in Aux Power Consumption.•Maintenance
planning and availability improvement.
4.what are the methods / observation for savings energy in power plant?

Condenser air ingress and dirty tubes.

13)Under loading of motors
14)Excessive air leakage in compressed air system
15)Faulty insulation
16)Drain valves passing
17)Air ingress to Boiler furnace
18)FAD of compressors low

UNIT-III
1. Differentiate between Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency?
Energy conservation is achieved when growth of energy consumption is reduced,
measured in physical terms. Whereas the energy efficiency is achieved when energy intensity
in a specific product, process or area of production is reduced without affecting output,
consumption or comfort levels.
2.What are the Methods of minimizing heat loads?

UNIT-IV
1.What do you mean by energy audit?
Energy Audit is defined as “the verification, monitoring and analysis of use of energy
including submission of technical report containing recommendations for improving energy
efficiency with cost benefit analysis and an action plan to reduce energy consumption”.
2. What are the base line data that an audit team should collect while conducting detailed
energy audit?
The audit team should collect the following baseline data:
- Technology, processes used and equipment details
- Capacity utilisation
- Amount & type of input materials used
- Water consumption
- Fuel Consumption
- Electrical energy consumption
- Steam consumption
- Other inputs such as compressed air, cooling water etc
- Quantity & type of wastes generated
- Percentage rejection
3.How do you classify energy conservation measures?
Based on energy audit and analyses of the plant, a number of potential energy saving
projects may be identified. These may be classified into three categories:
1. Low cost – high return;
2. Medium cost – medium return;
3. High cost – high return
UNIT-V
1.. Define ‘energy management’.
The judicious and effective use of energy to maximize profits (minimize the costs) and
enhance competitive positions.
2. What is the objective of energy management?
The objectives of energy management is to achieve and maintain optimum energy
procurement, utilisation throughout the organisation and
a) To minimise energy costs/ waste without affecting production & quality
b) To minimise environmental effects
3. List any one energy audit instrument used for power measurement and one for flue gas
measurement along with parameters to be measured?
4.What is energy monitoring?
