First, you will read Pages 306-312 and 317-327 of your textbook. Then, you will create a timeline of
important events in the history of civil rights and progressive reform between 1890 and 1920.
Aim for at least 10 events. Here are some possible events to include (this list is obviously not in chronological order):
Formation of the Anti-Saloon League
Booker T. Washington dines with Theodore Roosevelt
Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta Compromise” speech
Eighteenth Amendment
Great Pennsylvania Coal Strike
Hepburn Act
Ida Tarbell publishes “History of the Standard Oil Company”
Illinois Factory Act
Keating-Owen Act
Meat Inspection Act
Muller v. Oregon
Formation of the NAACP
Newlands Act (National Reclamation Act)
Niagara Falls Civil Rights Convention
Pure Food and Drug Act
Seventeenth Amendment
Formation of the Socialist Party
Triangle Shirtwaist fire
Upton Sinclair publishes The Jungle
Formation of Yosemite National Park
For some, a URL is included that links you to an article with more information about the event. Placing
them by year is sufficient.
For each event, write two sentences about the event. For the first sentence, identify the event. For the
second sentence, state the significance of the event.
Create a timeline using the website TimelineJS. You can view their tutorial at
http://timeline.knightlab.com/#make . You will need to fill out a template, which can be found here. I’ll
walk you through how to fill out the template below. When you have finished the template, follow
Steps 2, 3 and 4 as listed on TimelineJS. Make sure you input the correct URL.
