Dear Fellow Alumni,

I am a candidate for the office of Vice President of The Citadel Alumni Association (CAA). I look forward
to interacting with as many of you as possible to get your input and concerns to insure you are well
represented to the Administration and the alumni association as a whole.

I owe everything to the CAA. When I was in high school in Charlotte, NC, I always wanted to serve my
country as an officer in the United States Army. It was The Charlotte Alumni Club that called The Citadel
and told them to put me in the program. It was also the Charlotte Alumni who mentored me the entire
time at The Citadel and made sure I was taken care of in every way. My mentor was Terrence “Terry”
Ahearn, The Citadel Class of 1963. He was a member of The Charlotte Club, and a graduate with a Jurist
Doctorate from Boston College School of Law. He rose to Senior Counsel of Exxon Asia Pacific. Terry flew
143 combat missions in Vietnam as a navigator in the United States Air Force.

I have served our college in many ways. I work very closely with the Administration and CAA and
understand what the issues are and what needs to be done to resolve them. I will be a staunch advocate
for the alumni and CAA. I am currently chairing a committee to revise the information technology
infrastructure so the CAA can improve communications with the membership. Specifically, this will:

• Incorporate collaborative software utilizing:

o Video Conferencing

o Virtual Town hall

o Dedicated Chat rooms

• Private District Meeting Places

o Each district has its own meeting place for district meetings

I would like to share on more anecdote. I went to Airborne School as a junior while at The Citadel. We
had one more jump out of the required five to complete training and graduate to get our airborne
wings. Spectators were lined up on the parade ground ready for the graduation ceremony. One jumper
swerved under my parachute on the way to the ground and stole my air. My parachute collapsed and I
began a free fall to the ground. I landed on top of his parachute like in the movies. I immediately
climbed down the risers of my fellow jumper and we both bare hugged as we descended toward the
ground. We landed safely and I became a proud member of the Airborne Paratrooper Community. I was
spared that day and I believe I was spared to serve. I have given my life to service and much of that
service has been for our alumni and school. I want to continue serving the alumni.

As your Vice-President, my goals are:

• Preservation of the Corps of Cadets and the classic military education

• Aggressive representation of the alumni on all matters to the Administration
• Provide more direct support to area clubs such as subsidizing their online presence using a club
management system
• Increase membership by working with the CAA Board of Directors to improve direct benefits to
alumni for joining the CAA
• Have quarterly virtual town halls to seek input and hear concerns directly from the CAA
membership

The Citadel is one of the most unique institutions in the world. I will work to ensure our heritage and
core values that define us as principled leaders in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets persevere and
thrive.

Respectfully,

Greg Horton
