Q-5. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below. 15
Two hundred years ago in England four out of five children of poor parents died before they were
five years old. Of their many diseases Smallpox was the worst. Young and old were attacked and those
that did not die became deaf, blind or even mad as a result of illness. All were left with ugly scars on their
skin.
But no one ever seemed to catch the dreadful disease twice. A person who recovered from
Smallpox was safe, for at least some time. This had been noticed many years before and it had also been
discovered that a person could escape a serious attack of Smallpox by being infected with a mild form of
the disease. This was done by making a small wound and inserting some of the matter from a Smallpox
sore. This was called inoculation. But often serious illness or death resulted.
One day a clever doctor named Jenner had an idea. He had noticed that people who had been
infected with harmless disease called cowpox, which caught from cows, seemed to be safe from
Smallpox. He decided to try the experiment. He put some matter from a cowpox sore into a little bottle
and went off to see one of his patients who were waiting for a Smallpox inoculation. He made a small cut
in the patient’s flesh and put the cowpox matter into it. The Smallpox patient got all right. This was the
wonderful discovery of the Smallpox inoculation that Dr. Jenner made in the 18th century.
