Golgi

Apparatus

• What is the Golgi Apparatus?
The Golgi Apparatus is a complex of flattened membranous sacs called cisternae.

• What are the three distinct regions that the cisternae of the Golgi are divided into?
o Cis cisterna faces the nucleus and the endoplasmic reticulum
o Trans cisterna faces the plasma membrane
o Medial cisterna is located between the cis and trans cisternae.

• What is glycosylation?
Glycosylation is the addition of carbohydrates to a compound.

• What is sulfation?
Sulfation is the addition of inorganic sulfate.

• What is proteolysis?
Proteolysis is the breakdown of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids.

• What happens as the protein passes from the cis cisterna to the trans cisterna?
The protein undergoes different chemical modification such as glycosylation, sulfation
and proteolysis.
